What are good 3-person games?

Cut Throat

1 person has the the 1 -5
1 person has the 6 -10
1 person has the 11 -15

Each shoots the other person's balls & when all of a person's balls are gone he or she is out, unless there is a scratch then one of his ball are spotted & he shoots in normal order

The last person with a ball(s) on the table wins.

Any game can played as doubles with the single person shooting for his 'absent' team mate. Take turns as the single shooter.

Best 2 Ya,

You can play almost any game playing "Captain". The problem is though, when the best player is his own partner he has a big advantage.

Pill pool games are a lot of fun. You can even invent your own.

It is like 18 holes of "3 ball", although there are also 2 and 4 ball set-ups. This is a curious game as the least skilled player spends the most time at the table while the most skilled player the least. It is also simple to handicap .... we let a lower skilled player remove one ball at any time after the break with 0 strokes, on 1 to 18 holes.

I've played Cutthroat a lot before. Probably my favorite 3 person game. It evens the odds somewhat as the lesser players can "team up" on the better player by trying to make his balls a priority.

If you scratch, you pull one ball of both other player and place them on the line behind the head spot.

When groups have not been chosen::
a) if you make a ball of a group, you are "not that group" {"Not middle"}
b) if you make a ball of another group, you are the group not made.
c) if you are "not middle", and player b is "not high", then player c making a high cements you as high. {B is not high, c is not high, therefore you are high.}

We usually settled on shooting order & the breaker was low, 2nd. player middle & last player high, rotating breaker.

Yes I've played both ways where a scratch resulted in as you say & also only a person that was out & a scratch was free if no one was out & I've played where a scratch meant you had to pull one of your own balls down.

Best Wishes for All,
Rick

Yeah, we played that a lot when I was a youngster. The first one out always thought the other two didn't like him. Not a game for insecure people.

We called it Bastard Billiards.
the table uses the 1,2,and 3 ball. Set at the head, foot and middle spot.
Every shot requires a carom and = 1 point.
Make a carom and sink a ball you get the value of the ball# and 1pt for the carom.
All pocketed balls are spotted back to their home spot before the next shot is made.
Scratch on a run and you you forfeit all points in the run. That's where the Bastard name came in.

Really good practice for feeling the CB too.

One that we play a lot is called: Break the Breaker. It's One Pocket played with three people.
Everyone flips a coin and the odd man becomes the Breaker. The other two players are a team and are pitted against him.
The Breaker breaks to his pocket. If he doesn't make a ball the second guy comes to bat. At the end of his inning the Breaker comes up again for his turn. When he's through the number three man shoots. When he's finished the Breaker shoots and on it goes until the Breaker, or the opposing duo, wins. It's a fun game and gambling is permitted. :)

This is what we call captains

You didn't mention if it was for gambling but as worded I'd assume not. If not, as mentioned cutthroat is always a fav. If gambling can always play a ring game with cheez on the 3,5,9 or any variation. Captains one pocket is good for either although for play play will get boring VERY quickly.

That is fun with the right people (so is any game).

Nobody mentioned three ball?

Can easily be a gambling game. Many different rule variations though like the Tonk (also known as Tone or Tong) card game. If gambling get the rules straight before starting.

Here are the rules I'm used to.

Post dollar
Determine a shooting order (odd man out is typical)
Rack three balls
First shooter breaks
That is stroke one unless he also scratches which is another stroke
Keep shooting any balls, shit counts, until balls are gone
Every shot is a stroke and all scratches are extra strokes
Set a stroke limit, usually 4 or 5 max then rerack for the next person
Keep the same order always and the low score is the winner and winner breaks new game
The guy that just got done shooting racks for the next guy always
A tie by one is consider a tie for all and is a carry over round which means re-ante and restart the process
Can be played by any number of players and if gambling can make pretty large pots for a dollar ante
New players can only get in after someone has already one the cheese for that particular game with a low score winner and the new people always start last. Following the same order of the last games winner.

Ones are hard to get, Basically make all three balls on the break and don't scratch. Seen atleast 4 or 5 maybe done 1. You'll be amazed (depending on if your drinking or not) how many times the cut off stroke limit wins.

Me and some people play cut throat, but you shoot your set off of the white ball and into the pockets. Combos alowed also.

Yes, but potentially deadly.
One night two girls from St. Louis walked into the poolroom, I beg your pardon, sports bar and grill, and asked if anyone here plays One Pocket. Since it was my turn in the barrel, the Manager pointed me out and sent them my way.
They introduced themselves as Sharon and Karen, identical twins who were in town to attend a funeral. They asked if I had ever played Break the Breaker One Pocket. I told them I have played every game known to man, on a pool table. Karen then asked if I had ever played Strip Break the Breaker. Not wanting to look like a complete idiot I said, "Sure. Lot's of times."
Well, that's about the last thing I remember since I woke up here in the hospital. They tell me I've been here a week with double pneumonia. The nurse said the cops had found me sitting up against a wall out behind the pool hall, I beg your pardon, sports and grill, naked as a jaybird, and muttering something incoherent like, "Who's break is it?", and "Damn, it's cold!"
Anyway. Like you said. It's a fun game, with the right people. :)
