314-2 Shaft

I have sent my 314-2 shaft in for the 3rd time a couple months ago with ferrule issues. This time they said they would not warranty it because the shaft diameter is too narrow. My question is since I do not clean my shafts or use sand paper on them. Can my shaft diameter drop enough to go under warranty standards by just chalking the stick and chalk dust acting as an abrasive? I was offered a new 314-2 at a discounted price, but I said I was not interested since I have had issues in the past with their ferrules. Thoughts?

Don't think it's possible to lessen the diameter of the shaft that way, not significantly anyway. Please use calipers and measure the diameter. I'm curious to know how small it has to be for them to refuse warranty.

On another note, you broke the ferrule 3 times? That's extremely unlucky! Did you break with it? If you have a sledgehammer break, you should not use an ld-shaft to break with, imo. Soft breaks are another story. Maybe you can get your friendly, local repairman to exchange the ferrule for something a little more solid? Granted, you will lose a little of the ld-qualities, but it has to be better than constantly repairing it? As long as you don't choose the very heaviest of ferrule materials, the shaft will still have fairly low deflection, since it is hollow.

I don't know who you are sending them to.

Where I send my Predator shafts in for repair, they are always replaced.

Never ever repaired....

.

As the previous poster said, you will not wear the shaft down to or below Predator's minimum standard of 12.25mm simply by playing with it. I would also like to say that the material they used for 314-2 ferrules was garbage and you should have it replaced with something else rather than letting them put the same thing back on that keeps failing.

The 314-3 is a superior shaft in every single way. It's more lively and has a much better feel compared to the previous generation that played sort of dead. I even broke with the one that I had and never had any issues.

Just take the shaft to a repair / cuemaker locally.
I had a juma ferrule installed on one of my Predator shafts, same length.
The performance of the shaft(or maybe it was me?) any way, it improved
quite a bit. Love me some juma...

^^^ This is a smart guy. I used the exact same thing and the shaft suddenly played that much better. I think cost was around $30-40 + new tip.

When I was using LDs I used to break with the 314's and the Z line as well.
Never had a single problem with my Predator shafts.
I still often break with a Z2. It has a hard G2 on it and no problems.
Excellent products as far as I'm concerned......assuming you like LDs.

I experienced the same situation with my 314-2 shaft. I broke ferrule at recent SBX and brought to Predator booth to warranty. They measured and told me if was to narrow to warranty. I stated I have never sanded or such and it was actually just warranted two years ago at a past SBX. No luck, they asked if I clean the shaft? Of course I cleaned it three times in two years so I guess that was enough to void warranty. I have used predator shafts for years, first time I have had anything to complain about. I was displeased at the time but got over it. Maybe I should have read the fine print in their lifetime warranty. Still love pool, just like Predator a little less.

Perhaps Predator should have better quality control. Where are they made now? They say it a 11.75 mm shaft. Having been a machinist I still have my veneer and my micrometers. One shaft is 11.60 while the other is 11.50 meaning they're out of spec. They were out of spec when I first got them. I have cleaned them using McMagic from time to time. I can't believe I took that much off with the finest abrasive sheet of McMagic. Just saying.

There is no way a shaft will go from 12.75 to under 12.25 from just chalking and
never cleaning it, unless your chalking the shaft which would be nuts.
IF it did it would take a lifetime and even then I can't see it ever happening.
Now I've seen messy chalkers have there ferrules shrink down but you said
your shaft went down.
Maybe Predator just calipered the ferrule and thought it was to small, not the entire
shaft.

Ferrule wasn't there. It flew off when I was breaking. And the people that said you shouldn't break with an LD shaft I think that is nutz. Tell my why somebody would spend $600 on. Cue if you can't even break with it. There is at least 1 break every game.

Seeing how people abuse their shafts and use sandpaper, I have no doubt that, with enough play and sanding, you can sand off 0.25mm
I see so many shafts that have a lip between the shaft and ferrule, wood is much easier to sand than plastic, so over time, the shaft gets thinner, whike the ferrule wears slower.
Predator shafts are also overepresented, when it comes to cracked ferrules and de-laminated shafts, so if I could make a suggestion, it would be to change to any other brand of shafts...

Your 100% right but in this case the OP said he has never cleaned or used
sandpaper on his shafts.

It's not made for breaking. It's just not. The tip & ferrule are different on a break cue/shaft.
Only takes a break or 2 to damage it. If it does fall apart at first it is on it's way. I used a 2 piece player and broke with it. Everything was fine for a year and one day it fell apart. Should not break with any player LD or regular.

I told them to keep the shaft and I bought a true shaft from Samsara. I still have another 314-2 as my backup shaft. Definitely not buying another predator. I like how it plays but too many issues.

I am by far not an expert, but I see no reason why a pool stick would not be made to play the game. You should be able to break with anything in my opinion. Maybe some mushroom on the tip. So moral of the story if you are going to play with 1 stick do not buy an LD shaft I guess.

Please don't take my word. I'm only answering from my experience. I repair ferrules for the guys I play with that broke with theirs. Ask The CueMaker would be the best people to talk to. Cues are expensive. Can't blame you for being PO'd.

I am not mad. I am just trying to understand how it works. I play alot of pool and love the game. I was breaking with my predator because I had 2 of them and a Tiger X ultra. The Tiger has held up well. I didn't think it would hurt to break with, but I am by far not an expert. I feel I take good care of my sticks. I don't slam them around and when they aren't being used they are in my case. When I talked with the guy at Samsara he said if I ever have problems they will take care of it. A big reason I went with them. So far their stick has been fantastic!
