It's NOT the cue or the shaft that makes a GR8 player

The skill of the player is, of course, the defining factor of success and failure on the table.

With that said, there is always a group of custom cue and/or LD shaft "haters" that feel it's their moral obligation to berate anyone singing the praises of a new custom cue,or LD shaft.

Highly skilled persons in any sport/game can generally use the poorest equipment to beat your brains out, but given the choice they will always chose the quality equipment that will foster a sense confidence and consistency in performance.

If you can't afford, or are unwilling to spend $$$ on equipment...well then good for you. It shouldn't hamper your progress as a player. But please don't assume that you're somehow smarter, or have some sort insight that makes your opinion anymore valid than others.

Pool is such a mental game, that if a player believes a new cue, or shaft, helps their game, well guess what...it does. It may, or may not last; but to each their own.

If I just had me one 'o them Balabooshkies I could really kick some butt....

there's def some merit

to what you say, Mrdodd: I do remember being in a real confident mental state at one time in my past pool shooting days, and much of the confidence was something I attributed it to a cue I was using......felt like a real winner, and
I just couldn't seem to do much wrong with it. Of course we know it was my great shooting ability, but really liking the cue I was using didn't hurt matters any.

There may be truth in the OP'S statement. Kind of like in TIN CUP when Kevin Costner gambled using only his 7 iron. It's skill over equipment. I think when we try another cue and it's either better or worse than ours. It's feel and weight distribution that makes a difference. Ever try a cue and you couldn't draw. Chances are it's weight distribution caused you to not make cue ball contact where you wanted. Best cue is the one you have been using forever.

Well I guess that any pro race driver can drive a Hyundai & get the most out of it if it runs right & has good tires. Then again their performance will stand to be markedly better in an Aston Martin.

Sooooooo, what's your point?

I remember a big regional tournament about 15 years ago. A guy I know did great in the tournament using a house cue and actually bought the house cue from the pool hall and had it made into a 2 piece.

It may be partly in your head but confidence in your equipment can lead to playing better

I think he was describing a house cue, which is not that unusual for certain players.
To find a house cue with a good tip that rolls straight is a pain in the ass,.
If house cues were well maintained, straight, and made of wood, I could find one to play with.

When I get froggy (read = tipsy) i'll challenge an entire bar to choose any cue in the building off the wall for me, so long as it has leather on the tip, and play me for whatever they want (or 1 handed...depends on whether im drinking beer or whiskey)

This means one of 3 things:

1 - I drink too much (yup, very possible)
2 - I'm unbeatable! (nope - just better than bar scum)
3 - I'm forced to play in bars because there is no pool room w/in 130 miles (yup - pool is a very social game for me)

I can't walk into a bar with 1 or 2 tables, with a 3x7 instroke, sippin on cranberry juice, fiddle with several cues, decide on a shaft...and get a game. I'm stuck in bars - therefore I've learned to play with bar shit. play one handed. play off handed. play with cues bent 10 degrees, cues splintered in half lengthwise, play a 5 man team against myself...gotta find a challenge somewhere!

Lesson: If I want to play pool, I must leave my expensive shit at home and play off the wall, play badly mismatched weight...etc etc. I still run racks with shit equipment, it's just not as consistent....WHEN IN ROME...................

I know, I got in trouble one night for using my own chalk

The only truth in your statement above is the last sentence: "one you have been using.."

Balance is not going to make you miss hitting where you want to hit - Your stroke is.

Whether you spend $30 on a cue or $10k on a cue it is not going to have any affect on your game. What will, is you changing from the cue you play with all the time. Tip and shaft deflection have the biggest impact on your use of the stick as they have a direct relationship to how the cue ball reacts when it is struck and have a learning curve associated with them. Over time you will learn those 2 things on off center hits and you will naturally play them without thinking anything about it. Change either of those 2 things and your game will fall apart until you make the adjustments.

I am not against custom cues. I just won't support any statement with someone saying it makes you shoot better, as that is a flat out lie. People get them to satisfy their own egos whether it be to impress people or their own self gratification or they collect them and take pride in that. It is their money, they can do what they want with it. I prioritize the use of my money for other things.

You know everything prices on family favorites with your Club card and pick up bananas for an incredible $0.48 a pound and her and easy delicious dinner and get a whole roasted chicken for 2498 bigger selection and lower prices

I think it has to do with feel though. some people are just more comfortable with something they like. personally I prefer a nice leather wrap with some ivory joint & ferrules. it makes me feel like I'll shoot better being comfortable.

Can you point out where the 80% false information is? Or which 20% you think is truth.

Or maybe you are just replying to be a dick and really have nothing relevant to add to the conversation, thus you are trolling.
