What's the perfect bar race?

I have the ability to have a weekly tournament in my local bar, it has 5 valleys, we have good interest in pool here with not much skill. In a town of 15000 we have 5 players that play or played a lot and what I consider to be real good no matter where they play. I'm thinking of either a race to one maybe two so these guys don't kill the tourney. A race to one I think will bring back the bulk of the group if they legitimately have a chance to take down a giant. The 4 other guys want races to 5-7 and 20$ entry, I want to grow pool again and I'm thinking 7$ with 2$ going for green fees race to one. maybe a long race on a Saturday afternoon??? thoughts????

So, the aim is to increase participation and reduce the advantage of skill. What is the game? You may get more players coming out with 8-ball or short 8-ball instead of 9-ball. Short 8-ball is 8-ball played with 4 solids, 4 stripes in a 9-ball rack.

We used to have a good one here. 9 ball race to 3. Top players went to 4, and lower players went to two. The better guys would win most of the time, but there were also many upsets.

three blocks

Three blocks ,anymore than that you will die of thirst

Whoa,Whoa,whoa....... I ain't racing a marathon! Lol, yeah the goal is to have anybody can win type thing, even though the better players will always place. I was thinking maybe race to 2 and race to 1 on losers? It would be 8ball!

A couple of bars here used to have a race to 2 8 ball true double elimination.

It was pretty popular at both places. One was on Friday nights and the other on Saturdays. They each always had 25-30 players in them . One closed due to building issues...dont know why the other closed.

Just my 2 cents...

Here is just another suggestion...

Why NOT have it a race to 3 on the winner side (can always make it race to 2 IF there are a lot of players who signup) & race to 2 or (2 out of 3) on loser side...

The way it would work is players will flip for break & winner of flip gets to choose the game they play first OR gets to break first... whoever gets to choose the game either can choose eight-ball as first game OR 9-ball as first game... then play switches to other game... in other words lets say player A wins flip... then they choose to break... Player B then chooses either 8-ball or 9-ball... lets say Player B chose 9-ball... regardless of who wins that game, the next game will be 8-ball.... then 3rd game back to 9-ball & so on till the winner gets to needed games for the match....

It is fair cause regardless of the skill of the player to start the lesser skilled player still has a fair chance to win.... It really is NOT hard to do... once the format is played a few times... Opinions welcomed!!
