Why do sellers not include the PayPal fee in with their asking price?

I am just curious why sellers do not include the 3%(?) PayPal feel in with their asking price?

Sellers should understand that nobody is going to feel comfortable about sending payment as a gift, so why not just calculate how much you want for your item plus the % that paypal charges plus the most that the shipping and insurance could possibly cost, and make that your asking price (with free shipping)? Would that not make things so much easier? For example, instead of asking $500, plus $20 for shipping, plus 3% added on to that, then just make it a flat $550 (or whatever everything adds up to) with free shipping, and that would make things so much easier, right? Sorry, I am just bored. Thanks for reading my post.

Because doing that would make the price HIGHER.

If anyone in the world should understand the reaction of a nit to the price
I would think it would be...

sucks when you can't use paypal as a tool for extorting sellers and dragging them over the coals

I believe this happens because sellers don't want the cost taken out of their profit. What makes no sense about this is that you as a seller are using a service to sell your product. Then you are making the buyer pay for that service when in actuality it protects both the buyer and the seller.

The cost of the service should at the least be split between both parties. I personally will not do any business with people that expect to charge an extra fee on top of the price.

The primary site that uses PayPal is eBay and on that site there is no option to add the PayPal fee after the sale. The buyer pays the agreed upon price and the seller then ships the item. The money they get for an item is the amount they sell it for minus both the eBay fee and the PayPal fee. There is simply no option to do it any other way.

Sellers that ask for this are in essence passing on the fee to the buyer when that is not how PayPal is setup.

Is it really any different than buying something....anything.....advertised at retail price + tax

versus an all inclusive single price. That's how business is often conducted in the real world.

Yeah, why not make the tax included in a set price, and then just pay the taxes out of your profit? I remember a restaurant that did things that way. They would for example charge a flat rate of $2.00 for a slice of pizza, and then pay the taxes out of that $2.00 (that is what they told me when I asked them about why I was not being charged any tax).

Yeah, you make some great points. It really sucks having to pay 2 fees (3 if you include all of the costs of shipping, handling, and insurance, if you offer free shipping on your ebay auction) that include the final value ebay fee (10%) plus the paypal fee (3.5%?). Sell an item for $200 with free shipping on ebay, and end up with under $150 after all of the costs and fees (depending on the weight of the item and where it is being shipped to). Fees really do suck, but that is life. On an off topic NPR note, I do really wish that a cheaper service would come out that would compete with ebay.

Well why can't buyers just pay the asking price?

When put in a best price situation, I just give my best price and say its contingent on a feeless payment, no PP, no CC. Add the 3.5% if you want to pay with any other service.

BTW you can't ask best CASH price, then offer up a fee applied payment, that is not CASH. You cannot say best CASH price then want to throw in a warped Meucci asking full value in trade..... also not CASH.. but they tend to do both of these things on a regular basis....

Another mind numbing topic zzzz

Surely if the seller is offering various payment options, which is commonplace, then options that are going to cost them money should come at an additional cost. I hate using paypal to sell to the US, unless I know I am going to be using the balance to buy something in USD. Paypal absolutely rape you on their exchange rates, so not only 3.75% transaction fee, but also about 4% less than the middle exchange rate!! Barstewards the lot of them!!!

You make a point!

You're right anytime you ask the buyer to have to figure things out you start losing sales.

The seller is the one selling, he should understand the fees and adjust. When the guy tries to talk you down, then you tell him no I've got shipping, taxes, fees and everything in this price. I did that with a flat rate shipping to all of the United States, then I had shipping rate for Canada and abroad so just 3 shipping charges to choose from. I had to do it like that because the world wide shipping was so high that it would affect the price locally if I didn't separate it somewhat.

The biggest thing is to not lose a sale over something small.

This all came about when PayPal was still pretty new and most payments for online transactions were through money orders sent via mail. During the transition many sellers listed the price they'd accept via money order and then ask the seller to cover the PayPal fees of they wanted to pay that way. At that time PayPal really seemed like a benefit to the buyer as it allowed them to use a credit card and get their item sooner without having to get a physical money order and mail it and then wait.

It's different now, PayPal is a necessary tool for sellers because it's the only way most people want to pay. I always include the fees in my prices when I list things for sale, just seems simpler.

A cue was listed on Ebay with a "Make Offer" feature associated with it. So I made an offer...turned out the seller was an AZer. He made a better cash offer back to me if we took the transaction off Ebay. I agreed and got the cue before he received the check in the mail. Great transaction by Greg Howard (Howardthedick).
