Explain to me stroke vs poke

An analogy I thought of. It is a weak one.
The cue ball is your elementary kid. The point of contact to the object ball is the school (especially on long shots)
Poking the cue ball is like telling your kid how to walk to the school. (might get lost or lose interest)
Stroking it is like dropping them off at the front door. (cue ball will react the way you want it to)

Don't confuse a quick tempo and poking. Alan has an insanely short backswing but he goes through the ball every time.
