Motivation

Hi

I was wondering why I was not able to get into a good stroke while playing competitive games, for almost a half a year.

I tried everything I could to get the stroke back, but it looks now like I just lost motivation, I don't try to win that hard anymore.

What you do in situations like that?

Bet more. ;)

Play one shot at a time, never play a game. All the single shots will become the game.

Take a break until you get motivated, unless it's your only paying gig.

I agree with this guy. You have to redirect your focus and practice to conquer various scenarios. The Solutions come up over and over but each shot is a little different yet similar.

This also depends on what the problem is. If the problem is finding the shot line thats one thing. If the problem is applying the correct spin to the shot thats another thing. Regardless practicing a shot until you have the solution down pat is the only way to build your confidence and begin to enjoy the game..

Playing one shot at a time is a great suggestion. Mostly will help I guess though if you already have the motivation. Will try it, and see if it creates motivation as well...

You could just QUIT & see how you like that.

But that's sorta like being down in the dumps & trying to stop breathing...

That's not an acceptable option, unless you really wanna QUIT everything.

Maybe you could start going home, as soon as you lose a game. That will get boring real quick & maybe you'll start playing better, instead of going home.

Drastic situations require drastic measures...

I tried to take some breaks. Was not helping much, taking a break is a great suggestion though.
I guess loss of motivation is related to whether you want to beat someone (you have some kind of anger in a good sence) or you are find just enjoining hitting balls... After the break, I am not gaining any "anger"....

What level do you believe you play at? 3. 4, 5 etc.

Are you filled with doubt about how you will play?

I am 5. Was 6 not for long, dropped back.

Nope, no hesitation during the game. Just not taking winning seriously anymore. Small things add up (a miss, a failed defense, etc) and I loose. Winning rate is now 30%. Was above 60% for 3 years...

Just to be clear, it is not like I am loosing motivation because of the misses etc (can fix that with drills), I just don't have enough focus cause of drained motivation, and play badly now in offences/defenses and shaping.

Interestingly, I still have motivation during friendly games, and play much better there. Just all competing matches (APA, cash) are going into the ground...

You're not alone. Change the game or your company. Do you enjoy OnePocket?
Play pool to relax and have fun.

i know how you feel, i had some kinda crisis of motivation/purpose earlier in the summer. had just finished a singles league session and essentially bogarted my way out of a money spot the final 3 weeks. you'd think i'd be fired up to redeem myself but noooooo, i found it hard to practice. as in i'd rather watch Big Brother than go down to the basement unmotivated.

i decided to re-read a golf-centric sports psychology book that i hadn't touched in 10 years. and, it wasn't the words contained therein that brought me back around. well, yeah, the words did make sense and about 25% mildly resonated with me. i'd say maybe 5-7% of the content was directly appropriate. i can remember maybe only 3 or 4 of the thoughts today, 3 months later (but i do now repeat them to myself every time).

but what i think really worked for me was.... the act of going through the whole thing, and listening to someone else's words. i wasn't fake reading (like a school assignment) and i wasn't going all hallelujah i'm reborn either. some parts i'd scream BS, some parts i'd yawn, some parts i'd say oh yeah.

but surrendering control (ie the steering wheel) of the dialogue in my head for a few days was the dynamic that enabled me to put the past well into the rear view mirror and essentially start again. maybe it could've been a novel or a biography instead. but the key was to fill my head with someone else's voice for a few days. so i guess my advice is to get your read on. i'm lucky that my local library is a good one.

Try setting some goals for yourself. Hard to get motivated when there is nothing to achieve.

I would think you're motivated other wise you wouldn't of posted here, I would really suggest a road trip to the first pool hall or cheap bar tourney you haven't been to and play & meet new ppl. You may find its just the ppl your sick of
