USPS SUCKS!!! What do you do?

Ignorance is Bliss.....

First off, the USPS will not just leave a package if it's insured for more than $200 or if Signature Confirmation is required. Many mailers want to save a few bucks on shipping and don't pay for the extra insurance.....not recommended.
The USPS is the ONLY shipper that does "REGISTERED" mail...I repeat, the ONLY shipper doing "REGISTERED" mail. This service requires that each individual touching the piece, has to sign for it. Every employee that literally touches it, has to sign....REGISTERED mail does not get lost.
On top of this, if you are insuring a piece for $1,000 or more, REGISTERED mail usually is the same or maybe a lil cheaper than regular Priority Mail with Insurance. Most people don't know that....
So, if you ever ship a high end cue, always use REGISTERED mail. The first time a person uses registered it's kind of a pain to tape it a special way with gummed paper tape but it is well worth it. Registered does not ever go through any machinery that will bend or harm the mail piece so it's very safe. It may take a week to get across country but rest assured it's in good hands. If one of these were to come up missing, the last signature is responsible for the value. Hence....these do not, I repeat DO NOT come up missing.

Chris Paradowski...32 years in the USPS and still going. I was a window clerk for almost 25 years. Currently work behind the scenes doing Supplies. Use Registered mail.

Thanks for the info. I never knew that. Very interesting. I wonder why the Federal Government can't spend a few extra dollars by shipping people their government checks that they so desperately rely on every month? I once received someones government check in my mail box (at an apartment complex), and it was not just right next door that it should have been delivered to. I had to walk 4 buildings down, and hand deliver the persons check, because I knew how important it was that they receive it. They were very grateful to me for doing that. I wonder why the USPS can't also be that generous with their time, and hand deliver anything that looks like a government check? They are very easy to spot. Makes me wonder how many government checks get delivered to the wrong address, or lost in the mail. Very sad.

You have no clue what you are writing....

I can only speak from my own personal experience, and I have had many issues with USPS over the years. Several weeks ago, my mail man left a Signature Confirmation package at my door (it was a pool cue that I spent almost $300 on, which is a lot of money in my case). He or she did not knock at my door or anything. They just left it in the freezing cold weather, at around 7:30 am. Luckily, I walked out my door at around 9:30 and seen it laying on the concrete. Not sure if it was insured, but it did have Signature Confirmation on it, and I was tracking its progress. I just did not expect delivery to be at 7:30 am, and I knew it had Signature Confirmation on it.

I called my local post office to complain about it, but the person in charge did not seem to believe my story, or she did not care about what the mail man did, by leaving it at my door step, without at least knocking at my door 1st. Signature Confirmation was paid by the shipper, and that service was not delivered. USPS did not seem to care (locally).

Very good info, but not sure about your " ignorance " comment. Possibly many did not read this thread before posting. I never said my op was in regards to a cue this time. I did however say it was a piece of mail. Regular old first class. Imho, regardless if it's registered , priority , first class or anything else it SHOULD male it to its destination period. The only difference I can see is how long it takes to get there. But as I said, my regular mailman is great, it's the non employee subs that suck!

I wonder why important checks (like corporate checks, or any type of large or important checks) are not mailed via a more secure way, like Registered Mail, or at least mailed in a way that requires a signature for delivery. If it is very important (like a check, for a large amount of money, for example), then it really should be mailed via Registered Mail (if it must be mailed through USPS).

Because they are cheap SOBs lol! Honestly, depending on what exactly it is, sometimes they are sent to my lawyers office by messenger. In this case I am only speaking of the USPS

I actually agree with you but if you think about it ( someone who is sending out many checks ) there a huge difference between $13.95 and a stamp and it can add up quickly.

Works for me

Been waiting on something for a few weeks - found out Friday LOST. Pisses me off. Happens several times a year. In all honesty, with the volume they do its pretty amazing but still sucks. On a side note - just a reminder door front theft is rampant this time of the year. In a neighborhood ( a high dollar one ) not too far from me the cops pulled over a " suspicious " van and found 70+ stolen packages from that neighborhood. Cops were cool, they actually went door to door and redelivered the packages. Yall that are buying sticks online what do you do as far as delivery, sig etc? Whenever I have anything expensive or important I have UPS hold it at their facility for me to pick up as its only 20 mins from me.

Works for me

Yeah, I understand that, if the check is for say $1,000 (just as an example), then $14 seems like a pretty small % of that kind of money. I do not know, but I imagine the receiver would gladly pay the $14 for the security of knowing that they will receive their $1,000 (even if there is far less then a 1% chance of not receiving it). With that kind of money (which might be considered a lot of money to some people), I would not want to take any risks of the money getting lost in the mail, or possibly delivered to the wrong address. I assume that the corporation that sent you the check may not have been willing to go out of their way to send the check via Registered Mail, even if the cost could be billed to you (or however that could be done). I do not know, but if the corporation can afford it, and if the checks are for a large amount of money, then they should hire someone to make a trip to the post office, and mail all corporate checks out via Registered Mail, or Certified Mail, or any method that would require a signature. I guess it just depends on how important the mail piece is to the receiver. To a person that depends on receiving their monthly SSI check (so that they can get through the month), it would be extremely important (in their case).

So I haven't had much issue

But they made a believer out of me

I paid for over night shipping

I sell a lot of stuff on Ebay a few thousand items a year and only one or two items get lost a year but I do ship a lot of smaller/mid sized packages.
