C players to beginners

Im an APA 5 and I struggle with being a consistent shot maker and hooking myself with bad cue ball speed. I usually have a fairly good idea where the cue ball is going but my speed control is terrible so I get snookered a lot or get on the wrong side of the next shot. I also end runs by dogging shots I shouldnt be missing anymore. My shot making consistency frustrates me to no end.

BINGO See my post #5, We are in the Same Boat. I lost on Monday due to the same exact reasons. I 'knew' what I wanted per-shot and the next ball/shot, but ended-up hooking myself causing me to give ball-in-hand. Extremely frustrating when my 1st 3 racks, I was shooting smooth, consistent stroke and very good ball control. Then it just seemed to fall apart and I don't Really know why! :angry:

The only thing that saves me a lot of times is that I dont take a ton of hail mary shots. I will play defense on 10 straight shots if I think it will benefit me. Ive found that most people in APA hate to play defensive games.

And again automatically taking it to accomplished players doesn't quite fit the general narrative imo, like i said how about hearing from someone who was there yesterday struggling with the same issues as you? How about not hearing "ah go hit a million balls and gamble with a pro, you'll learn".
I think i stated my initial intent and may of proved an earlier point by now. A coffee shop for certain players to sit and converse, what was i thinking?

I heard a man giving some lengthy advice to a woman who was an APA two...
...i was surprised to find that he was an APA five....so it was RECIEVED knowledge...
....but it was excellent.

But don't ignore the more advanced players from dropping into your coffee shop....
....and fade some wiseguys and some humor....you can make it work.
Riboner has a pretty successful APA thread going.

Well, I gotta go....would you mind paying for my coffee?....I'm a little short....:embarrassed2:

Start w ob two diamonds out from a pocket. Line up cb straight on and one diamond off ob. Hit the shot in, follow w the cb one diamond, try ten times. Then do same shot and stop the cb. By stop, I mean it doesn't go rt or left after the stop, 10x. Same shot, draw the ball a diamond, straight back, 10x. Do this progressively by moving the cb farther off the ob, record your results.

This drill helps w sighting, aiming and speed. When a cut shot comes up it will be easier to work the tangent line.

Practice working that tangent line on cut shots. Set up a short cut shot and use a target for the cb to land on making shots that require that same stop, follow, draw.

I still do this weekly and will continue.

The dogging shots, I don't think that ever goes away. I think in my game it's a breakdown in concentration. It's why I started to see how many balls I can make in a row. This is v concious pool playing practice where I make sure all my pre-shot routine is done w out skipping any step. It's harder to play when playing so conciously but it's about ingraining that routine and when the pressure is on concious play is usually what is going on.

It's really hard to teach.I got the same "just keep shooting kid and you will get there" as most get.Kinda shunned by the upper players,learned from the guys a little above me here and there.Kept hammering at it and got up to a 6 that gets called a sandbagger lately.I'm still a bum who's not there yet,but I honestly can't fix a 2 or 3 with any tips.They just need to hit balls and play as strong a player as they can.After a while your stroke,speed,and spin control just starts to come around from experience.I have noticed the better players have started wanting to play with me now and show me stuff.I'm assuming because my basics are strong enough to start learning some pool.

You never know what will trigger someone.
Back in the 90s, a guy I knew didn't play real well but he was pretty vain about his snooker
game....and his wife had never won a game off him.
She came to me behind his back and asked me how to improve....
...I told her to forget all that BS her husband was telling her about style......
....just think about hitting the ball with the cue.....your arm will then cooperate.
In a few minutes she developed a stroke and beat her husband 3 games in a row.

Her husband wouldn't talk to me for a week....:smile:

If you want to learn about pool play, tips, low deflection shafts, who's SVB going steady with, CTE, TOI, FBI, and CIA, then hang around; but avoid prefacing your statements with: "No trolling, please." Or, "If you don't have anything good to say, then don't say it." Stuff like that is like the smell of shit to a fly.
We do not need and section dedicated to C players and under. You guys can grow into the game just like the rest of us has.

Is there great advice here. Yeah tons. Pretty simple to spot and ignore the trolls. Almost seems like you are intentionally poking the bee hive in the corner.

Probably the two biggest things that impede my progress. Taking too many "hail mary" shots (great description of those, I always call them 'hero' shots), and hitting the cueball too hard.

I know it in my head, but in the heat of battle I seem to simply forget.
 
If I was not real big on drills I would at least do a stop shot drill. I think stop/stun shots are the most important shot in the game. Your stun line is the one time you know exactly where the cue ball is going.
As far as cue ball position the thing that really helped me a lot is instead of just looking or thinking about where you want the cue ball to go set your cue on that spot and take a good look at it from where you are shooting. I think many of us know subconsciously how to get the ball there but we may have a bad habit of carelessly picking an area "about" where we want to land the cue ball. Pinpoint where you want the cue ball, worst thing that could happen is your position play gets better.

Very true!..This is the most aggravating regular occurance on this forum!..People will ask a question, that has already been asked and answered dozens of times, quite often only one page back!..People too lazy to do minimal research, just clog up the forum with repetitive questions :rolleyes:

PS..Every possible question on tips, wraps, and aiming systems, has been beat to death hundreds of times!..If someone is too lazy to research it, they don't even deserve an answer!..:frown:

I admit, it is not always easy to research certain things..But if you play with the words long enough, you will usually get your answers!..Sure beats clogging up the forum. ;)

Never that Pt, I value the cause they are the ones who got me to where i am (or helped). That's why I mentioned consulting them in the beginning, see i suspected that most would jump out and i was expecting it much earlier actually and say "well who the hell are you, how many US Opens have you won coming on here talking about helping people" but without me saying it you yourself observed it with those two APA players.
I would just like to give them their own place and use what i know and the help of those who really know to see how we can all help each other.

i hope you said your piece, i know how hard it is for you guys to not have to comment on each thread which is why this bothers you so much but here's a tip on the house and none pool related. "Just move on" give it a go and see you'll be amazed as to how many beaten to death thread sudden just disappear.
Are you serious? Clogging up the forum, what do you think this a text plan from back in the days? Do you honestly just go page after page looking for threads to comment on, cause you know less viewed threads and older one keep moving further back right?
Gesh there is just no quite in you guys, if only you'd put that effort towards something position once in a while.

Very glad you get to make the decision on who needs what, now if you'll be so kind as to see that this thread no longer needs you so maybe you can take your "stuck in old ways" self and perhaps let the forum decided for themselves as to what they want, there are other members to this "public" forum your know or perhaps you'll like us to get refunds on our registration fee and move on to some place else.
