99.99 % of leagues players would be a "D". Even APA 7's where I play rarely run racks. 2 in a row is an extinction level event. 2 or 3 in a session is more the norm.
It's not a horrible way to determine someone's speed, if you don't have time to tell them to please complete a skills test and report back to me.
I realize that. But is it just me? I don't really consider a "D" player a "pool player". They are just someone who may have joined a league and play pool for the fun of it.Big majority of the players will fall outside of this handicap system, but those are the players who likely need handicapping.

Another way to say it, is if someone can't run 1 rack at least somewhat frequently, is it really worth the time to try to "rate" them?
My point is, we don't need to worry about trying to rate beginners. Starting at the "C" level, where they can run a single rack periodically to me is the beginning of a real pool player.Well, we all started as a Z player at one point. No one wakes up one day and plays A speed. If we stop treating lower skilled players as pool players, who's going to replace us when we retire?
I do a 2-3 pack "at least" one a week. But I run 2 racks in a row probably every other day. In 8-ball, you obviously need to make a ball on the break too. For some reason I think I have a mental block and I always seem to mess something up the times I've been on the 4th rack -- so I'm definitely in the 2-3 pack range.
To do these packages in every 10 games seems like more than most people can do in any of the categories.

players that can run a rack or more of 8ball is less than 10% of the league players
This rating system would be OK to rate the better players I don't think it would work for amateur league players
You make some good points. But the rating system that I proposed in this thread was just for an easy way to determine someone's speed by talking to them. If all I need to ask is, "Hey, how many racks can you occasionally run in a row?" -- and they answer, "Normally I can only run 1 rack, and that's it" -- then I can know that they are definitely a "C" player. But if they respond with, "I can routinely run 5 packs, but have once ran 7" -- then I know that I have no business gambling with them. :grin:The D player category is probably the largest skill level category in pool. The skill level ranges from players who get excited at running 2 balls up to someone who has run a rack before. The player at the upper end of the range will almost never lose against a D player at the bottom end. Compare that to the C level where a C- player can certainly beat a C+ player on occasion.
I think it's important to make those distinctions at the lower level since if you are instituting handicapping, you want players at the mid D range to be able to be somewhat competitive in order to bring them back.
