Seyberts Question

Mike,

I was eying down OB's new Merry Widow design - 3/8x10 joint with an OB-1+ shaft which I know can be taken down to 11.75 because I have a few friends with OB shafts at that diameter. Though, it wasn't a plus shaft, it was an original I believe so maybe that makes a difference.

Was also looking at the Predator Classicos but I'm too big a fan of OB products to pass them up! =)

Are you sure that they have an OB-1 turned down, or are they playing with an OB-2? The hole in the front of an OB-1 is slightly larger than 1/4” diameter. If you turn it down to 11.75mm, you won’t have a lot of sidewall left on the shaft.

If I sent a shaft to Seyberts and they messed it up, I would expect them to replace it, unless they specifically said they will do it on a best effort no guarantees agreement. You bring your car into the shop, they drive another car into it, you are not going to pay for the repair are you?

I’ll bite. Let’s say you take your car to the shop, and ask them to perform ANY operation on it that voids the warranty on it. Your car doesn’t work after they do it. You’d expect a replacement?

Predator states that the warranty is void on a 314-3 that is turned down thinner than 12.25mm. If you ask Seyberts to turn it down to 12mm, they’ll tell you they can’t. If you say “do it anyways”, you are on the hook for whatever happens, as the MANUFACTURER has told you not to do it. Understand?

I'm fairly sure he had an OB-1 that wasn't a plus - if I remember correctly, they were offered in 11.75mm before the OB-1+ were coming out.

Anyhow, I did see that the OB-2+s come in at 11.75mm stock so I don't have to worry about getting a shaft turned down anymore. I used to have an innate skepticism to them because they have a Euro taper instead of a pro taper so I thought they might "feel" odd for me but it isn't the case.

Kudos for your reply!

If you want a smaller diameter in the pro taper, get the S tuned Z3 shaft from Seyberts. It’s a Z3 tapered like the 314-3. Or, try the Zero Flex Slim hybrid from Lucasi.

I actually had my local guy turn down the taper on my OB2+ to make it a pro taper and it came out great. I never got used to the low deflection thing so it sits in may case now.

Sir:
If your not going to sell it to re-coup your investment, then I would change out the wood ferrule and play with it. But you should know. It will void whatever warranty is on it. There is not one single shaft available that fits every player.
