Honest effort with a LD cue

I have played with a traditional maple shaft for as long as I have played pool. My skill level is somewhere around a B+ to A- on a bar table playing 9 ball which is my primary game. Any given session I will break and run multiple racks and my run out game is far superior to my defensive play.

I recently bought a Predator Roadline with a 314-3 shaft out of pure curiosity as I have never been able to get comfortable with any LD shaft before. I havnt been playing much for the last few years and have recently started to put some time and effort into my playing again.

The one thing I have noticed is that I feel I get MUCH more action on my cue ball with this set up than I have in the past playing with my custom with a maple shaft. The amount of spin I seem to be able to put in the ball is really surprising to me. Shots with inside seem to hold much better and the affect of any side english is very pronounced once the cue ball reaches a rail. I find myself playing shape with much less variance from center ball than I used to because when I pocket balls in the manner I am used to the cue ball simply flies off the cushion and goes well past the path that I predict and am used to with my old equipment.

How many of you have experienced similar and what do you a tribute all this extra "action" to. I am a firm believer that the cue ball only "knows" two things, where it is hit and how hard so it leaves me to reason that these new shafts with all this "technology" really can affect the amount of spin placed on these balls.

Not sure you are getting more spin but it probably feels that way because of lessened amount of squirt. Example you play a ball with outside your cue ball will get pushed "inward" and then swerve out as the spin catches. Now you are getting less squirt to overcome and thus it "feels" like you are getting more action.

Same thing in reverse for inside. Your mind is still programmed to the old setup and once you teach yourself new data it will become the new normal.
 
What was the width of your old shaft compared to this one?

Start with the assumption that it's not really happening - because everything we know says so. So what makes it seem so?

One possibility is that with less squirt you're encouraged to hit farther from center.

Another is "new cue syndrome", which mostly means paying closer attention to how you're hitting the cue ball.

If you're thinking a smaller tip hits farther out on the CB, I can see why it seems that way, but it's really only true if it's more rounded (dime vs. nickel, say), and then only a tiny amount.

Very similar, the new shaft is advertised at 12.75 and my old one was 12.8. I think the posts about the difference in squirt are correct. The cue balls seems to come off the object ball differently than before.

Just gauging impressions if someone was going from 13mm to 12.4mm versus this scenario of 12.8mm to 12.75mm.

If you feel that way from the 314-3, try the Revo out and it will be even more action and easier.

Yeah, but the tradeoff as to the lack of "feel" of the Revo shaft makes it not so black and white, in my opinion. I'm aware of the deflection tests and that the Revo deflects less than a Vantage shaft, but I've tried them both for a considerable period of time, and I've made the decision I'll stick with my Vantage shaft. I can still get all the spin I need from the Vantage shaft without sacrificing nearly as much "feel" as I do when using the Revo shaft.

I'm so used to the black shaft now, I'm not sure I can go back to the wood shafts. Here they may be looking into a wood colored Revo.

The Revo doesn't feel dead to me fwiw. Haven't had much LD experience before the Revo, I did use the pro shaft for a few weeks before I bought the Revo. Before these 2 I strictly used a regular maple shaft with ivory ferrules.
 
With my LD Jacoby Edge Hybrid shaft I'm able to put more action on the cueball than with my traditional maple Joss shaft or than with Tiger X laminated shaft.

The most spin you will get out of the cueball is with an LD shaft and a nice layered tip. Did tests with like 6 shaft and tip combination with two players, shooting the same shot about 3 times with each shaft. The difference in spin and action you get from a standard shaft with a standard tip to an LD shaft and a layered tip is pretty hefty. Of course this is based on your ability to make the ball with an LD shaft in the first place and hit the cueball where you think you are hitting it. Going from a standard shaft to an LD shaft will reveal flaws in your stoke on the first shot, even on a center ball hit, or what you thought was a center ball hit at least LOL

I Agree. I have tried to play with LD shafts a few times in the past when borrowing friends cues and have always given them right back because I would miss shots that were easy for me with my cue. This is my first real effort with a cue that I bought and decided to give a real effort towards playing with. Surprisingly I have been making balls and getting out without the issues I seemed to have had when I wouodnplay with the borrowed cues. Time will tell if those past problems reveal themselves.
