Has anyone ever used Jacobs rubberflex chuck?

On their lathe(s)?

I have one on a small metal lathe (SB 10K), always loved it when parts/bars were a little bigger than 5c collet work. Thinking of adapting one to Hardinge nose = 1-1/4" thru bore + 1-3/8" collet capacity. Thinking it still might require bushings for non-marring. Curious before making effort, if it has been used before? Pros/cons?

I bought a used one of eBay and had it for all of a week before selling it. For non tapered stock they are great but even with tapered collets I could not get the run out less than a couple thou. I know a few cue makers who use them but they weren't for me.

I have two...I love them. I hardly ever use my 3 jaw chucks.

Last year I actually bought a CAT50 taper "rubber flex type" off eBay dirt cheap & cut the taper off; then bored it to fit Hardinge nose. 2 problems occurred: I've not been able to find collets for it, and guess is they would be "quite" expensive.(seems to be German made) 2nd: with delrin bushings in it my experience has been as Str8eight posted: can't repeat closer than a few .001's. It's not the mounting, either.

It was"almost" successful, & I have 2 of the more common Jacobs both with complete sets of collets but neither fits a Hardinge taper nose as is. Based on my experience above, I've been leery spending the time to adapt one of them so other input is useful.

Canadian- do you still have to protect the shafts? With plastic bushings? Tape?Paper wrap?

I've only ever used 4 jaw independent, and Adjus-tru style chucks. Once both ends are dialed in, it gives a lot of confidence. But it would be nice not to have to do all that iterative indicating.

Someone should make nylon or delrin collets for a nose-closer collet chuck, like you can get nylon 5c's.

Anyone try plastic top or pie jaws for one of the Adjustru type chucks?

Yes I use delrin collects on everything except straight rough diameters.

Thanks for the input, everyone.
Guess there is no magic answer.

The delrin bushings made for above chuck were slotted to collapse.
Maybe I should make them more carefully, larger number of closer sizes, and not slot them. Or maybe try delrin top jaws on an adjust tru, next.
