Watch Guys: suggestions needed...

I am not a watch buy, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn, and I would go with a Movado. Just because I always wanted one since high school. Now that I can actually buy one, I don't really care to spend the money on something like that LOL

Were you in HS in 1970?

I'm a watch guy, have been for a long time.

First depends on his style and what he likes. Then depends on if he wants/would appreciate an automatic movement (or manual wind) or if quartz is a better fit.

I know nothing about quartz watches really.

For an auto, I really think a Seiko SRP777 is a classic sports watch that is incredibly well priced. It's only $300 but it has a lineage going back a long long time and has stayed relatively faithful to that.

If you could find a used Omega Seamaster like a 2254.50 of 2531.80 that would be amazing, they're awesome watches, but prices have gone up quite a bit since I was buying those.

Then there are the boutique brands who are doing some nice things. I like both the ready to wear options from MKII watches...I actually have a Hawkinge from them and other than being small for my massive wrists it's a great watch.

Also, if you can find a good deal on a used Oris Diver 65, those are pretty nice and have a great vintage feel to them.

1. Kids today tend to not wear watches and they will likely be a thing of the past except for smart watches and people who need them for work when a phone wouldn't work.
2. If you are still interested in a watch, then I suggest a Tag Heuer (Aquaracer or similar with metal band).

1970 called. They want their cuff back.

To answer a few questions:

My son does like to wear a watch. He's currently into his iWatch, but he borrows a watch from me from time to time for interviews and special occasions. I am relatively confident he would enjoy a nice timepiece.

I really don't want a Seiko or Citizen watch (I have a few of those and they are excellent) I'd like it to be something a little more special to mark his achievement.

Thanks so much for all of the great input.

^^^This^^^ (from another watch guy). There's a lot of good value in Hamilton. Or maybe one of these Navy Pioneers in the $5-600 range...

Hamilton would be a solid choice, you get good value for your money with a nice design! I like that Khaki auto that was posted first, that ones really nice.

That first Hamilton is nice.. love Hamiltons, I own an original Ventura, great dress watch!

That second one is a little old-fashioned for a young guy... both my nephews like the chunky sport watch look... I wouldn't do a dress watch! There's a G Shock line called "Mr.G" that looks very cool, nice bracelets, chrono's, etc.

My Khaki I posted about earlier...over a decade old, so the exact design no longer made. I always liked the military design watches...so will admit my prejudice.

First I want to thank everyone for their thoughtful input. It was much appreciated.

We decided to get him the Hamilton. I love the history of the brand, and I love the style of this particular watch.

(we actually got him the one with the white lettering)

Since I got criticized for suggesting Invicta, get him a Seadweller. You know he wants one. And, if he plays pool, all the better.

All the best,
WW
