How do you polish the linen wrap on a cue that wasn’t polished (much) originally and thus make it more slippery? Do you need a lathe?

polished linen, especially pressed or double pressed is nice, I love my string.

let's see what the guy's have to say

This Works Really Well.........

It is called glass burnishing. I have 4 cues with Cortland Linen and regularly burnish the wraps.
This eliminates any fraying fibers that may be starting to lift and presses the linen flat once again.

You have to really push down hard when rubbing the linen wrap and also very fast.......faster the better.
You arm should tire when doing this correctly. You should feel heat buildup on the wrap from the friction.

Don’t burnish a really dirty wrap. Clean it with a slightly damp towel twisting in the same direction as the wrap
twist on the cue butt. Then dry rub immediately afterwards the same way and make sure to get any dampness
soaked up.......feel with your fingers to make sure.

Now you are ready to burnish. But what can you use? Any round, smooth heavy glass object will more
than suffice. I use a glass beer mug or a 12 oz. beer glass both of which has a smooth glass outer finish
and the glass is thick so you can press down firmly without worry it might shatter.

I do the wrap in sections.......top 1/3, middle 1/3 and bottom 1/3. Lay the cue butt on a towel flat on a hard
surface. Lean down into the cue butt with your shoulder when you burnish so you can press really hard.
Rotate the linen wrap so the you can do the entire wrap circumference and then tackle the middle 1/3 and
bottom 1/3 sections doing the exact same thing. When you have done the wrap in 1/3 sections, now do it
again in 1/2 sections and then do it one last time using long strokes when you burnish the wrap using a long
rubbing stroke of the entire wrap instead of sections like earlier.

It is important to always press down firmly and rub very fast to create maximum heat which presses the
wrap flat again and also creates a sheen that will improve the more you use the wrap. That’s it......no
spraying of any cleaning substance.......just a warm moist treatment, dry rubbing and a lot of arm rubbing
and like I earlier wrote, you arm should become tired when you do this right.......total time involved.....
20 to 30 mins......you can then burnish once a month without cleaning or as aften as you want as long as
the wrap isn’t really dirty otherwise you should repeat the cleaning process but no more than 1 - 2x per yr.
