$10,000 One Pocket Challenge: Lou Figueroa vs John Barton

I just watched the first game and contrary to what's been said a million times on here, Lou played pretty good and made some nice shots to win that game 8-0 (especially the sweet two rail bank on game ball). Maybe it went downhill from there, but it looks like Lou could have beaten him every game if he wanted to.

Over the years I have heard a bunch of different takes on the match.

Everyone sees it through a different prism, depending on how they feel about JB, Lou, 1pocket, their grudges, and whatnot.

And I've said before, there are only a couple of people that know what was really going on during that match. In any case, thanks, Jay. You'd don't need it, but a Greenie your way.

Lou Figueroa

Stop rubbing salt into JB's wound.

Lou Figueroa
you are the
definition of
a hypocrite

My hypocrisy actually holds no bounds.

Despite all the jumping around, he gave you a pretty good game. I commend you for not completely folding.

John has absolutely derailed you as a human being. He found YOUR crazy button LOL. He won.

I just watched the first game too..small sample size, but I get this vibe
will peep a few more games, curious how it ended up close as it did
and I wonder, lou, or anybody in the know, who picked the intro music?
found it interesting that lou came out to the more outwardly aggressive song
(an excellent ratm cover, btw) when his style was alleged to be more composed
perhaps the "tone" of the match was set there and then ^_^

We both picked our own intro tunes.

Actually, when Ed, the owner of Sandcastle, suggested all the music, lights, and fog machine I told him I didn't want any of that. I just wanted to play. But I relented because he wanted a "production," so I went with it.

If I recall, JB did the George Thorogood, "Bad to the Bone."

I wanted to do something older, more classic but was warned off that by kollegedave who recommend the "Kill a Man" as bringing me into the new century. Wanting to be hep, I went with that.

There was a DJ to play our theme each time we won a game.

Lou Figueroa
OK, boomer

haha..well done lou, welcome to the new millenium:grin:
I noticed "bad to the bone," too- both good tunes you all picked
when it comes to pool, meat and potatoes is fine with me
but I admit the production value is kinda fun, maybe given the occasion
thank y'all for jumping in and putting on a good show!

I have no Affiliation with either party involved and do not know either one other than seeing post here from both. But , After watching the match I can say that Mr Figueroa had the upper hand and I agree with Jay that he could have won every match . He , to me , looks to be the better player and rightfully Won the match as he should have, I know it is late but Congrat's Lou on the win. John made some decent safety's but Lou clearly made a lot more better shots .

Probably a dumb question but what was the beef between Lou and John? At the beginning of the match, I was expecting a fight to break out.

Aiming technique, no shit.

JB has been a vocal and wordy advocate of Center to Edge aiming, going back to RSB.

I personally feel that it is a deeply flawed system (I may have said words to that effect, in stronger language, more than a few times) and I myself just aim just by feel. So basically we'd been sniping over this aiming thing for over 20 years and this match was the "put up or shut up, show me your aiming system" throw down.

Watched the hole thing yesterday recovering from neck surgery! Thank you Lou and John for having this match. Awesome from start to finish. Lou looked to be in control of him self and his game. John on the other hand look good on some racks but thru out some looked like putting on a show got in the way of playing smart one hole. Not taking anything from either player they played strong. IMO Lou just played stronger and won the match. As it stands I’d ask Lou for lessons On one hole and still have John make my cases.

Well as I enjoy watching One Pockert, I watched some more this a.m., I am up to game 3, intent is to watch to the end.

I honeslty find it difficult to comprehend the idea of gambling that amount of money, as I am not a gambler.

Even if they were playing for bragging rights, I would have still watched, as the level of play. Is way beyond my skill. Learned a few ideas, I can maybe remember next time I play.

I think the commentating was sometimes really good, and other times it sounded like the commentators were drinking....

Freddie <~~~ was always drinking

I just rewatched game 1, and it was the microcosm of the whole match. I'm still shocked at Lou's game winning shot. The two balls by John's pocket must have looked very makeable from Lou's point of view.

The commentary was very knowledgable.

Back when I watched it, I was impressed.

If it's the shot I'm thinking of, JB didn't know it and he actually starts walking to the table thinking I'd played a safe until the ball comes off the second rail.

I learned that shot the hard way, playing Mean Charlie Green (RIP) from Chicago. He was in St. Louis, maybe 15 years ago, and we played some for $50 a game. He swished that two-railer on me twice within the first three games we played until I finally figured out how to protect. Shortly later, I made it on him and he pulled up when I got back to even. Honestly, I'd never seen it before and no one in St. Louis was playing that shot back then.

Clearly you were playing the shot all the way. There wasn't even a hint of safe in it! Definitely a shot to have in the bag. I think you shoot that shot when in the lead, and you think your opponent is in no danger of running out.
