I quit smoking 65 years ago -- right after my military service ended (we all were smokers those days in the infantry). I was lucky enough to meet and become crazy about a gal who hated the smell of smokers' hair and clothing. Made quitting much easier for me than for most guys I knew.

My personal experience in the Army was that guys (myself included) coughed openly and often, especially in cold weather. It would seem to me that given the ever-present, deadly Covid respiratory threat, coughing/sneezing whether from flu, Covid infection, or secondary/primary smoke would be especially hazardous.

Your thoughts or playing situation?

Yes, smoking is bad. In my state it isn't allowed indoors in a business unless its a cigar lounge.

I don't thing the lack of smoking in a bar, restaurant or pool room makes it measurably more safe for non-smokers when it comes to covid catching. The smokers themselve are probably doing more face touching and increasing their own risk.

Yes, we have an awesome place that’s open 24 hours with a nice selection of 8 and 9’ tables but they allow smoking and it’s really thick.

I play league there one night a week and hate it as I wear contacts and it really impacts my vision. The smell doesn’t help either but the smoke does have an impact on my game.

The only real "room" in my town of ~25,000 is a bar with 3 valley tables. My state doesn't allow smoking indoors in any bar or restaurant. There is a smoking patio with a roof outside so the stink goes on out there. My town used to have a room with about a dozen 7' valleys, a couple 9' and snooker tables in the back, along with a weird z shaped table made from splicing two tables together at the side and corner pockets (a company produced these). The pool culture in my town "died" about 20 years ago after the original owner passed away and the next owner let it go downhill and fill with criminals. It was a few years before no one would go there for fear of being stabbed or something, this is in a low crime town. The new owner was a bad dude that was into bad things. This local bar with 3 valleys still has kept the torch burning. The players are very passionate about pool, with about 3 serious nights a week.

its been 20 years, give or take, since smoking indoors has been banned in public places here in Maine. And guess what? People adapted to going out side for a smoke.

Pool rooms, restaurants and bars are all soooo much nicer now. Its such a regular part of our world and has been for some time now, so much so that's its really jarring when I travel and see someone smoking indoors...

I had quit smoking for many years. but when I started playing again, everywhere local that had tables also allowed smoking. I unfortunately again started to associate the two activities. It’s a conundrum, when you have to choose between playing and not smoking. In a close match when the pressure is really on, and the guy next to you is lighting up, it’s tough to resist the temptation and not bum one.

Dan: Just google "x-ray ( or MRI ) images of smokers' lungs" -- that's both enlightening and shocking, and will keep you on track in continuing to firmly resist the temptation to slip back into the "coffin nails" . . . as we eventually learned to accurately view them. So many of my Army buddies passed away much too early from the habit. Never even got the joy of being grandpas.

Not for 25 years. Also, on the positive side I doubt if more than 3 or 4 of the 150 or so people I play with Smoke. Likely a third also don’t drink.

The majority of people I play with are over 50. Many very health conscious. Most well educated. I hike, cycle and play ball hockey with many that I play billiards with.

Any establishment here that allowed smoking would be out of business. People are too aware of their health to be around smoking.

yep and all the campers are dying of cancer. at least they would if they sat in front of the fire every day and sucked in the smoke and blew it out their noses. even if they did, it wouldnt go into the faces of those around them.

The trick is not adding all of the chemicals and additives to the wood.

No smoking indoors in Illinois for years now.
For a non smoking pool player it’s the best thing that ever happened.
Now if we could just get over the Corona.

I had a 10k sq ft room in SE MI with 28 tables. No Smoking law started @ 20 yrs ago. At first you could have a dedicated smoking area at which didn't last long. It really didn't hurt business and was actually nice, smokers just stepped outside as today. We had 5 smoke eaters before the ban and they could hardly keep up with clearing the air. My brother took an 8 footer home once we rearranged the room from 30 to 28 tables and the smell of smoke was embedded in the table and actually stunk up his basement once it was reassembled.

It comes down to your state laws and there's still some states that allow it.

In some states in the south it's allowed if the venue is 21+ and then it's in the hands of the owner of the business. They can allow it or not.

I know heavy smokers who won't go in some places because their ventilation system is so bad that even they can't stand it.

I heard somewhere that SVB won't play in any venue that allows smoking..... but you never know what to believe when a pool player is telling you something.

Yes, last time I was at Revolution Darts and Billiards in Springfield VA smoking was allowed.

I have to make the laundry room my first stop when i get home to get neked and then hit the shower.

My place, Magoo's-Tulsa, is non-smoking. They have a couple outdoor smoking areas.
