I never got Big John though. Why is he knocking Fats action? There are guys like that but he doesn't seem like he would be one of them. When you traveled you looked for guys like him though. For some strange reason they want to impress you with their knowledge. We used to call them pool detectives. Once you found them they would give you the line on everybody. They would tell you everything. Who gambles how much they will lose, who the nits are and so on.

Characters and story are what make a film great and rewatchable. This allows us to overlook small plot holes or the fact that the pool game isn't realistically accurate. The characters are dramatized and are not totally realistic either. If the game was all crazy trick shots we probably wouldn't like it so much, but a little dramatic flare in the game as with the characters just makes it more interesting.
The average joe doesn't know it isn't reality, but it does represent the game enough to pass as reality. It works for the masses, which is what the film maker are looking for. I was in the Scuba business for 20 years and any movie with diving in it was usually unrealistic if not totally impossible. My ex was in the medical field and hated medical shows, but the masses love House, Gray's Anatomy etc. TV and movies are entertainment and fantasy. Even true stories are dramatized cause real life if boring unless you spice it up a bit and edit out the slow parts.
I didn't know the Hustler wasn't just a movie about pool when I watched it. I was slightly disappointed in it at first because of my expectations going in. My first impression was this is a movie about a couple of drunks with some pool in it. Then when it sunk in and I seriously reflected on it I saw the complexity of the characters and story. Pool part wasn't just a thrown in accessory, but an integral part of Eddie's character and the story's tale of passion and addiction.
Le Mans is a great movie, but I would not want to watch it on a loop or any regularity, and if you don't like racing or fast cars you will probably never want to watch it again. The Hustler is a great watch and is a movie that can interest a non-pool player too.
Rogan is all about Rogan. How many years has the "Hopefully Joe will step in and sponsor a tournament, or lend some support" conversation come up with nothing from him except an Earl video.
The pool room I grew up in was just like Ames. The only difference he sold food but the poolroom was strictly pool. No video games or anything else. That is were I learned the game from the old Hustlers that hung out there every day. That is why when I watch the movie it takes me back to a simpler time. Plus Jackie made Minnesota Fats come to Life.
I dont believe any of these people should monetarily support an event/tour, maybe just some mention of it on their various social media, such as headed to or watching the Mosconi Cup, US Open, Derby City, etc if you wanna watch some of the best pool players in the world check it out.
None of these famous people owe anything to pool players but since they enjoy the game giving a shout out would probably help tremendously.
Besides, who would want their name directly tied to an event where the players are gonna bitch about the payout, rules, starting time, etc. Its a thankless job but the average public knows nothing about that and it wouldn't affect their reputation by saying they are going to be attending or watching a stream.
