just got dinged with sales tax, thought it was an error only to find out our Federal government put this rule on the books last year

will be an extra 13% for most of us on most online purchases from vendors outside Canada

It's been like that for years. It was just hit or miss at the border whether they actually inspected it or not.

If they actually inspect it it will cost you the tax and 10.99 cbsa inspection fee.

I've been buying stuff from the US for 15 years and it was always hit or miss if I get charged or not. Usually under 50.00 it was fine but anything over it was more than likely to get hit.

Just got hit for taxes on an order of chalk from Finland as well.

Well at least you are used to paying excess tax there, so what's a little more.

Tax laws are on the books to collect a proportion of the revenue that flows around as the market does its thing.
Buying and selling online is just another market doing its thing.

Just because you are a small fish (either seller or buyer) does not mean you can skip out on the taxes due.

I rarely buy anything on line . A couple of small items in the last few months from China…both under $10. Never paid the 5% GST ( no sales tax in Alberta…keep pumping out the oil).

This has always been the case. You pay the tax on goods based on your provinces taxes. If it is out of country this is goes for used and new equipment. For instance i bought rum from a distillery from nova Scotia i like. Good east coast rum. I pay Ontario sales tax, not NS.

I always wanted to see trade agreements fix this for small orders. It would encourage more cross border orders and increase small business sales. Under 2k per order, i would order a lot more from other countries. And many in other countries would order more from ours. It would really support a lot of smaller entrepreneurs.

Stupid people play game with not filing, working under table, best excuse I heard was from
distant relative who have not filed in past 20+, years.

Reason if he doesn’t pay taxes the government is wrong on their spending they do.

Would like to hear the story he tells irs agents when they catches up with him.

In order to avoid excessive fees and taxes use US post when shipping to Canada from USA.
Most of the time you don't get dinged for tax, in very few cases you do. It has been like t his forever.

They are getting pickier about collecting taxes. It seems anything over 50.00 is more than likely to get hit with taxes and cbsa inspection fee. At least with USPS you don't get hit with brokerage fees.

Atlanta that's been my experience lately. It used to be about a 25% chance I got dinged but the last 2 years it been about 75% .
