dumping the break cue and feel liberated!!!

depends on the game for me i typically dont break full strength, and i play with a CF shaft so typically will get way more control with my playing cue. sometimes though i like to let loose and will use my break cue. but usually the cue ball flies off the table.

I always broke off with my snooker cue (9.5mm) for English pool back when I played nearly every day on our college tables. Never had any issues over the four years.

I picked up a break cue (10mm) after a while of using my playing cue (9mm) as I had some cash to burn, but I rarely find myself using it. I do bring it along, but only use it if I'm finding that the balls aren't splitting well. I've never seen anyone I played with using a break cue, and I'm the only one I know of using one. Once my new cue comes in (8.75mm), I may consider using it more once I get out playing more often.

It's also useful if I'm playing on American tables with the bigger balls, so I guess that's an upside.

how so?

what speed do you hit with your pure x?

are you suggesting that you cannot hit the ball as hard with your playing cue?

i can hit in excess of 20mph with my carbon playing shafts but usually keep it around 15-17
No clue on speed I don't bring speedometers to the pool room

Like I just said, I don't have a playing cue that breaks like my pure x does for me.

Howdy All;

Kinda depends on what I'm up to;
Going bar hoping? Take the Mueller's SP don't need a breaker.
Playing a tourney, Better level shooter (Hunter, JW, or Blud), and the breaker.
Playing some 1-P , don't need no stinkin' breaker. chuckle
Be flexible, improvise, adapt, overcome.

I love my break cue. It was one the best $200.00 pool-related purchases I have made. With the phenolic tip will likely out live me and I hate the vibration I get on using my one of my cheaper house cues. YMMV

I have always broken with my playing cue. Wouldn't want to play with something so delicate I can't break with it regularly. Maybe I would do better with a break cue designed for the purpose, but I usually make at least one ball on the break and regularly get good spreads with my regular cue. I use Triangle tips, and they do tend to mushroom a bit right after changing one out, but after a couple of trim-and-burnishes they're good for a long time. I've tried various buddy's breakers out of curiosity a couple times but really didn't see much difference in the results.

I'm just trying to understand why

your original reply suggests to me on the surface that you are generating more force via increased cue speed with the break cue, something you have not been able to do as of yet without one

but hey, if you don't know you don't know

and I suspect most of us measuring speed simply use a phone app

If a player has a big break and can get better results using a break cue-good idea.

As for me at home I’d use a break cue sometimes because I had it there. I never had one when I was playing rotation games. I played mostly 1P until I stopped playing so didn’t need one and when I did need one the marginal improvement was not anything notable. And I never had the power to do any harm to a tip. So for me a break cue isn’t really a plan. For others it’s a brilliant idea.

Yeah I don't get all sciency
My break cue does for me what a playing cue doesn't

Is it a surprise? A cue engineered for breaking does better than a cue made to play?
I'd like to know my speed but not paying for an app to do just one thing
