Do you think the poor kid has a chance against someone who has been playing for decades as long as the experienced player is using something that could reasonably be called a cue? He doesn't. LD shafts help but they aren't magic. I went with a carbon fiber cue because I wasn't happy with my 314-3 and nobody had the wood shaft I wanted in stock. I figured I could sell it and get a wood shaft if I didn't like it instead of climbing the price ladder one rung at a time. The CF shaft has the characteristics I like but I don't honestly think that there isn't a wood shaft that I could shoot just as well with.
That's what I want to know

It's amusing that you objected to the idea of bringing x-ray machines to every tournament, but you didn't object to tarring and feathering anyone who violates the rule. SMH.

I don't think the kid would have much of a chance, but at least he'd feel like he lost a fair game, instead of feeling like the deck was stacked against him due to differences in the equipment being used.
The fact that you devote so much time and energy to finding the best-performing shaft suggests to me that you do think that the equipment makes a difference. Otherwise, why not just grab a much cheaper wood shaft and be done with it? You could save a lot of money, if you didn't bother with LD or CF.

What a load. Wooden cues are selling on this site for thousands of dollars. Evidently some believe that premium equipment makes a difference. Time to drop this bickerfest, no one is improving their weak position. Spend more time practicing and less time with POINTLESS bickering. The board will be much improved. If you must continue, do it via PM so the rest of us aren't exposed to the idiocy.
Take two players of the exact same talent/ability. One uses standard maple and the other hi-tech. Do you think the shaft would determine the outcome? What shaft you use will not determine the outcome of this or any other pool match.
You're only exposed to it if you open the thread. I also think the OP is completely off-the-air but i chose to check out/respond. No ones making you read it.

I call for the ban of ALL wood cues. It is too harmful for the environment to keep cutting down tree for the trivial use in a pool cue.

First off, super rare for anyone to cut down a tree to build a cue, we buy wood that has been cut and aged first.
Second, you stated "trivial use in a pool cue." Trivial? Do you play with the super fancy, cue of the future, the best of the best, yup, the Aluminum cue by chance?

I absolutely do think that the cue will determine the outcome.
I can play against myself and do this - my low-deflection cue does what it's advertised to do, and it's much easier to apply english and get a good hit on the object ball - I often don't have to compensate for squirt at all. A standard maple shaft requires a lot more compensation.
I would posit that learning how to compensate for deflection takes much longer with a standard maple cue than with an LD cue. If you take two equally-gifted players and have them each practice 2,000 hours with two different cues, the one with the LD cue will beat the one with the standard maple shaft.
Sure, it's possible to find a solid maple shaft that is expensive, but it's impossible to find a quality cf shaft that is inexpensive.

I hope you know that you have the option to simply not engage. There is no requirement for you to read every post, much less comment on it.
Many cues are works of art, but that is a separate issue from new technology, although now that you mention it, I do think that CF shafts have resulted in a rash of ugly-looking identical pool cue shafts that lack the individual character that is found in wood shafts.
Of course, your aesthetic may be that all-black carbon fiber shafts look, feel, and sound as good or better than wood shafts, but if that is your opinion, I respectfully disagree. I'm not sure why you feel the need to throw words like "idiocy" around - it seems like certain people just want to be nasty for the sake of being nasty.
If the argument is that a young player can’t afford a $3-500 shaft, then the same argument should be made they shouldn’t be spending their time and money playing pool either.

I know some REALLY good players that play ONLY with standard maple shafts. To say that LD/cf is an advantage is ludicrous. You have to play with the stuff that matches your game and what feels/sounds right.
Maybe CF is nothing special as Dr. Dave point out in Utube. Man muct know something as he has PhD.

I didn't mean a word of it. I was just using it as an example. I was momentarily reflecting the possible thoughts of a tree hugging environmentalist. The tree had to be cut down at some point.
I was pointing out the stupidity of wanting to have something banned because of personal opinion, without one ounce of proof that anyone can play better with a carbon fiber cue. I've tried them. I made the CHOICE not to purchase one. I just dont think they match my game. But I'm not going to say no one else should be allowed to use one. Anyone with that thought can have it shoved up their ass....SIDEWAYS. LIVE AND LET LIVE.
IF you or anyone else doesn't like carbon fiber shafts, dont buy one. But I'll be dammed if anyone here will make that decision for me. I can do that for myself.
