Alternative to Calcutta

Our Local club has a gaming license and we have been visited and warned by the Gaming Commission that if we continue to have a Calcutta or Player Auction that we will be sited and fined for Illegal gambling on another persons in a skill game. We are allowed to do Side Pots but that Really hasnt taken off like we hoped and no Calcutta is kind of ruining our pool scene a bit. Does anyone have any other alternative options to keep the pool scene strong. Our Calcuttas were considerably more payout than the tournaments themselves.

Who's running the Calcutta? Maybe someone not affiliated with the club can run their our pool

Have the calcutta off-site?? Have it a nearby bar or something. Just a guess at a possible remedy.

Hard to believe that apparently somebody must’ve turned you in. Perhaps you could hold your auction a little more discreetly, maybe in a private area or something, away from onlookers who are most likely responsible for one of them having turned you in.

We hold a Calcutta/auction before our weekly tournament. When there are families or anyone present in here that I am not comfortable holding the auction in front of, we move it out to the front porch.

So a simple question is why jeopardize your business, gambling, other license, and investments by breaking law.

You say you got warning, lucky you did not get day to be in court, or shut down.

I hate knockers.

Sad to hear you can’t get together with friends and bet a social amount of $ on a simple pool touenry.

I wish you the best.

You may hate but at least they were warned. Had it been some Badge Heavy Letter of Law nut job. Could have been worst.

Two business owner had visit from alcohol enforcement for same type violation.

One got only verbal warning and clean up act. The other was not so bright, his business is closed because of trying to be smarter then enforcement guy.

Im not asking for ways to break the law, im asking for alternatives that are legal that would drive more interest than a sidepot.

That’s true, the warning was cool.

But harmless $ in a pool Calcutta is a joke to get a enforcement action against. It’s social, not a for profit gambling operation.

I have always liked this as an alternative.
You take the bracket and number everything 1- however many players.
Before the draw you auction off spots or set a price $20 per spot, $50 per spot, etc.
You pay out based whoever gets on that number and if they finish in the paid spots.

Pull tab business keeps many a location in business here.
Losing your, or getting a gaming license warning looks bad come renewal time.

I can tell you almost always those start with "anon" tips from a disgruntled person.
Had someone long ago who had a competing tournament call in the boys on my tournament.

King of the hill side pot. It is like having a second entry fee. Say there are 20people in the tournament. 10 actually believe they have a shot at winning. These 10 each put up an entry fee. Say $100. There is $1000 in this pot. Of these 10 people the last person in the tournament wins the money. He doesn’t have to win the tournamen. Just be the last man left in the tournament.
the person who win the money must send me 10%

thats what we have now and its flopping. Non of the lower players are interested in it and then non of the higher players think its worth it and arent showing up because the payouts are so low.

You have to decide what the trnmnt is worth to your business. Can you add money and increase the interest ? If holding the trnmnt generates more income maybe that's the answer. I wouldn't add 500 if it only generates 500 worth of extra business , as that is going backwards.
Will the authorities allow the break and run pot?

I've been involved with things with cities counties zoning code enforcement and stuff. It usually operates on a one strike rule. In other words you can get away with almost anything once out of just ignorance. Once warned they'll come down on you like a ton of bricks.

I have been working on something and wanted some opinions on whether or not its legal and if it might get interests. I was thinking a Chance Auction Raffle. Essentially every participant in the Tournament has a Bucket and people but raffle tickets to place into those buckets. If you want a higher chance at winning someone you put more tickets in that persons bucket. Before the tournament begins a ticket is drawn from each bucket and then that person that wins that raffle will get money back depending on how that player finishes. Also we would count the amount of money earned in each bucket and that player could purchase back half his action for putting half the amount of their bucket into the raffle prize pool. We would have a minimum amount for each bucket.

Maybe go to the authority that shut you down and have a chat with them. Ask them if there is some way to do it legally. I'm sure all it is is they're not getting their cut. In layman's terms, it's called sucking dick.
