Wrong Ball

I have shot the wrong ball more than once. Had friends warn me, never had an opponent warn me. Never expected them to. Never blamed anyone other than myself.
This is the U S Open, not league night at the local pub. You sit in the chair and keep your mouth shut until it's your turn at the table.

Here's my two cents.

Shane: Shane did nothing wrong. It's not his responsibility to coach his opponent while he's shooting. Regardless of his ulterior motives (referencing post #49 which is ridiculous), the US Open is arguably the largest event on the calendar. This is big boy pool with a lot of money on the line. I'm all for sportsmanship but choosing not to coach in the heat of the battle is not poor sportsmanship. Mistakes happen and Joey should be held accountable for his, not Shane.

The Balls: I HATE the Aramith Black Set. That being said, it would have been wise to invest in a set knowing you are going to play in the largest event of the year where they will be used. Especially given the uniqueness of the set. Good on him for not placing blame or whining about it especially at such a young age. He carries himself very well and I'll be rooting for him. He will certainly be a part of professional pool in the US in the future.

I don't want to have to buy an inferior set of balls to train myself to shoot the balls in a NEW order.
The color is a problem. The new cameras show colors very well and any of the lighter sets pop just fine on TV.
I am convinced that if Aramith came out with a new set of 15 all black balls with oversize numbers on them, they could pay Matchroom some more money and Emily would be out there praising the new set as they forced the players to adjust once again. The fact that there is someone working at Aramith who made a decision to needlessly change the color of a ball to the exact color the number right next to it has been since the beginning of time, is disappointing. Darwinism should have killed off anyone that stupid long ago.
I am thankful that the other events use standard colors and don't change the entire game just for some sponsorship money.

Bullshit, that is not coaching, and coaching is not meant from the opponent but from a third-party.

If someone tells you to shoot a different shot, that is coaching

The kid learned something yesterday

That was a great interview with Joey to watch. What a nice kid. His parents must be extremely proud. What a large family he comes from. Really refreshing to see, and also hear he has a sister that shoots competitively also.
Absolutely, what a cool kid. Great game, great attitude. Everyone involved agrees with how it went down. Unfortunate mistake, but he took it like a champ.

Surely everyone agrees the MR colors are stupid, I’d love it if all balls stayed traditional colors. But its been that way for a while now, anyone who plays serious pool knows them, not that big a deal IMO.

Cool thread.

This post from Shane makes things worse imo and shows his true colors. If he would have said it's not my responsibility to correct him, I could understand that. But when he talks about the points and the money it shows that he made a cold intentional decision that has nothing to do with the rules. He has lost my respect for sure.

I see it differently. Shane has obligations and financial responsibilities. I don't know how much he ended up making himself by winning that one match, but IMO, you have to think about those things. It was not a moral decision. They are professionals. Could you imagine a football coach running on across the field and telling his opponent that they are lined up offsides and to fix it before they got a penalty?

I guess it depends on the situation. In a casual match with a friend, I would never my opponent shoot the wrong ball.

I probably wouldn't let my opponent shoot the wrong suit of balls in 8 ball league either.

Having said that, I don't make my living out of playing pool- so I'm not sure what I would do in this match.

When I asked earlier about sportsmanship, it was a genuine question- not meant to knock Shane. Just wondering what the view is on such etiquette in pro pool

Meh, he just screwed up. That's all. I'm sure he knows it, and doesn't blame anyone but himself. He'll be OK.

I've done it in a big tournament. Guy felt terrible having to tell me after I shot it. It was the last game of a team match for the win. I smiled and told him he did the right thing. No different than a scratch or bumping the ball on a practice stroke. Needless to say, I owed a few beers after that performance.

I actually like them.😔

I've played local small-time 9-ball league, and at least a handful of times I've shot a ball fully setting up for the wrong ball in rotation. It's not that I got down and was shooting the wrong ball. I actually had SET UP to shoot the wrong ball, never seeing or acknowledging the true next rotation ball. Luckily, my teammates usually caught me and called out.

Since it's a friendly league, I've also had my opponent tell me wrong ball, and I've also told my opponent they're shooting the wrong ball. In a local tournament, I'd probably do similarly, but I wonder if I was in a close match, or the finals (yeah, there's a fantasy idea - me in a finals match), whether I'd override my instinct to be gracious and stop my opponent, or call it after he/she shot.

It's almost gotten me in trouble, though. Playing on a double-jeopardy team, I've almost stopped a player shooting solids in 8-ball when in my head they're shooting 9-ball out of order. Sometimes the neurons don't connect, especially when I was captaining and trying to keep score in simultaneous 8- and 9-ball matches with little to no help from my teammates. (Yeah, I'll never be put in THAT situation again.)

In this case, while it would have been all happy-happy, touchy-feely in a sportsmanship utopian world if SVB had somehow communicated wrong ball, it was completely within his rights or (and per rules?) even within his duty to sit quietly and let the referee handle it.

In pool there’s a unwritten rule

The rail never ever speaks.

If your sitting on the rail and see something and a player comes up and asks for a opinion or ruling there’s only one correct answer

“Sorry I did t see that”

The rail isn’t part of the game and therefore can’t speak. No exceptions, the rail isn’t a referee, coach or involved in the session. Ever.

Anyone sitting on the rail who does get involved in a game, match or action and does says a word or influences or attempts to influence the session needs to stfu or leave on the spot in the event they do stick their nose where it doesn’t belong.

As I recall, you never liked him anyway.

What is Shane supposed to do? Get up and chalk his cue for him? Rub his sack for encouragement?

We need to hold ourselves accountable for our actions.... not once again blaming someone else for them. I'm sure Joey would tell you straight up Shane did nothing wrong or unsportsmanlike.
You are spot on right. Great post!

All this PC helping my opponent shit makes me sick. I’m there to win, not nurture my young opponent. Let him pay his dues and grow into becoming a player-which I’m certain he will be one hell of a player. But coming up soft isn’t gonna help him.

SVB was 100% right in what he said and did. If he wasn’t I’d say so as well. I’m not here to help SVB either.
