What happened to Fargorate this week?

Coos Cues

Coos Cues
Just about every higher rated player in my league dropped around 5-6 points suddenly this week. Even guys that aren't active in league right now. Like there was some kind of data dump somewhere with a ripple effect.

It's getting increasingly difficult to trust this thing when stuff like this happens.

Happens all the time, since every linked player is part of a web, when someone moves, or a group of players move, the rest of the players adjust. Say if you played a 600 even, you got ranked a 600. You go on vacation for a month, they enter 10 tournaments, win a lot and go up to a 640, you get back from Mexico with one less kidney and you find yourself a 620 Fargo. That is way simplified, but basically how it works. It adjusts based on more data, even though at times it may seem odd that you go up for no reason but that really just means the players you are linked with have more recent data in the system so the system looks at it as a more accurate rating (more data for an average = better).

That is the subject of this video

I tried to go into this vid with an open mind, but once I saw an illustration of a "floating dock" with piers I knew fargo is obviously based on flawed logic.

"The Equalizer" for the win.... ;)

Totally kidding, for anyone that can't read my sarcasm.

Perhaps a local league operator sent a data dump to Fargo? One of the old leagues i played in uploaded 5 years of results earlier this year and my Fargo jumped 20 points over night. It doesn't mean the system is broken, it just means that Fargo is obviously reliant on the data they receive.

Not for my ego... lol

That is a good point, there are many players that just want to play the best they can, and want the rating number to be higher. Then there are the players that want to cheat and get easy wins, those complain about the ratings being too high.

A few years ago my son and I were talking about how we wanted our ratings to get better and another player by us said "why would you want to be higher?" since to them, higher rating = harder to win = league mentality of using a handicap instead of skill. Some people just don't get it.

This post could be titled "I don't understand data". How is adding more complete data "untrustworthy"?

Keep in mind this the same cat that was waaaay too concerned about the time required to clean pool balls. Hard for me to take him seriously after that. As for FR, these little humps-n-bumps are totally normal. Nothing to sweat unless maybe you're some tinfoil hat conspiracy nut ala Harriman. ;)

I think it really comes down to people being mad that the results aren't instantaneous.

They need to donate a couple million for Mike to hire more staff and to increase data intake from tournament providers. Otherwise they need to just say "thank you Mike" and go on about their day

The group of players I choose to associate with focus on improvement as well, rather than seeking an edge by throttling their effort.

I like to think my natural spd should be in the mid 680's. Fargo has not only provided me with a means to measure myself against my competition but also a vehicle in which to drive me toward stronger focus (results). Once I get back to where I think I should be. The next step will be 690...., etc. Don't know if I have the drive to breach the 700 threshold.

Agree 100%. Been playing for 40+yrs and FR is by FAR the best rating/hnd'cap system i've ever seen. The biggest plus imo is that it 'travels' well much like the slope-system used by the USGA in golf. You can go anywhere and play knowing that the ratings are on the square. Do people try to 'gaff' it? Sure but its very hard to do over time. Mike and his system only goes by data turned in from TD's/orgs.

Lincoln City 9 ball matches just got entered. That's probably the data that had the most effect.
Thanks Sheldon that was my main question. Whether there was a data dump of some type. I just thought it was odd that after going 32-3 since league started (after LC) that suddenly my rating was down by 6 points overnight. Trying to understand how that happened. As far as all you haters on this thread it's ok to not click on it once you realize it's a "clown" thread. But you just can't help yourselves can you? Boomers made you possible.

In what state do you play?
Not looking for a response like, "inebriated", either lol.
