Hi
Someone on here posted a source for a flexible material for protecting your shaft when it's in the chuck. Did a number of searches, didn't come up with anything.
Thanks for any info.

Disclaimer: Not fully a cue maker yet, but...
I use these. The leather strap is from Mid America Cue Lathes. The rubberized straps are from Gary Langley. I had a collet tear-up the finish on a cue I was working on so I ordered these from Gary and they work great. just E-mail him to order.

I was going to post pm SSDiver2112 as he has a pic of the collet in one of his threads
Otherwise I have used the rubber material for fridge magnets and also asked my wife for some elastic ribbon material and cut to fit
 
I got a used printing blanket from a small print shop locally and cut strips from that. Works great and I got about 40 strips from one free blanket.

I never could figure out what the material was, but that definitely looks like the material the thicker one is made from. The thinner one is less spongy, so it works better if you are worried about run out as well as grip. Not sure what they are made from either.

These work very well, I have been using the same strips for over a year now and they still look new. Mine came in a pack with two different thicknesses of strips, I like the thinner set better but they have a clear plastic strip on them that needs to be removed, takes a little work to get it off but it peels off easy once you get a corner lifted up.

Well palm to face... I've been using them for almost a year and didn't know the plastic was supposed to come off. I thought it was to protect the rubber from the jaws. I will have to take a look at them later.

I am not sure the plastic is supposed to come off either but with it on I felt that the strip was way to stiff. Like I mentioned above, they have held up for over a year and I use them almost daily.
 
Same reaction on my front, I thought the "thinner" peices were too stiff. I peeled off the plastic and now have some very thin rubber strips which do a nice job of protecting the shafts/butts as long as you don't crank down too hard on the jaws. I do like the minimal impact of runuout.

I'm looking at some printing blanket on ebay and it looks to be the same material as in the pic above. He hasn't responded to my email so I'll give the print blanket a try, don't really need a piece that big though.

If you go to any local print shop, they'll probably give you a few for free.

Austin Hill who spent a summer travelling the country and visiting as many cue builders as possible, told me he uses strips of inner tube rubber and it doesn't hurt the finish and grips like hell. Don't know where he learned it from and I haven't tried it yet because I have strips of leather I have been using but it sounded interesting. He is a smart kid. I loop my leather strips and staple the ends together to make them easier to keep track of and install on a cue/chuck.

Thanks John, glad to hear some one thinks so! Lol

Anyway, I took the idea from when i worked at Jacoby Cues. They use the inner tubes for every operation when is comes to a finished cue; tip installs, joint replacements, butt cap replacements, you name it. They also finish cut to depth and square the ends of the wrap channel on new cues after the clear coat is wet sanded and buffed chucking up directly on the forearm and butt sleeve to do, its obviously very important to not dent or mar the clear, they work very well. I think one of their biggest advantages is the grip they offer over leather when working on carbon shafts....

I realize Gary has sadly passed but I would love to get one of those rubberized collet straps - does anyone on here have idea where I can get one?
