hope this is not a stupid question
but my friend just bought a steve klein cue
he was intrigued by the silver on the outside of the brass inserts in the shafts
almost looks like the brass insert is sleeved
its 5/16x14 piloted steel joint
anyone know why the outside of the brass insert is silver looking?
he has never seen that before
thanks in advance

The threaded insert in the shaft looks to be brass shore nuff, while the insert in the butt shore nuff does not. Not sure I understand the question he has.

I'm guessing what you are saying, because brass isn't brass like it was years ago, probably worn thru to it's steel or other base metal

No. Galling is transfer of metals. Stainless can transfer to brass. The brass insert is solid brass.

More likely, the tarnish on the brass is polished and looks silver.

for someone that is not a cue maker like myself
trying to learn something
how am i to know when your responses are correct and not "joking"?

Not to answer for Renegade, but that is the beauty of forums.

Even if he was joking, his response had a lot of value. I wasn't real clear on my replies, but with the photos available, I was just postulating on possibilities.

Even jokes have the ability to open avenues of discussion or provide thoughts for further research.

Can you get better pictures? Is everything sticking out brass or is it wood like the pic below (link to cue below also)? Given how dirty it is it's hard to tell, and given how dirty it is I would put my money on it being wood and that is simply a super polished area?

Better pictures would help for sure.

All the cues Steve made for me all had wood on the side of the brass insert with just a bit of brass showing at the bottom (like Chili Palmers pic). Sure it's not just burnished wood?
