Some tournament experience (run ins with both sides of luck)

Had a bit of a crazy realization about how much luck is involved in this game. I played in a tournament over this weekend and had a really great time. I played pretty well on the first day, double elimination round… I lost 5-3 in the first game, before winning the next game 5-3. Both strong amateur players.

My next game was against Zhu Xi He… (formerly ranked 43 in the world - think his current FR is 774). Needless to say, I didn’t fancy my chances... :ROFLMAO: He was 2-0 up, and just watching him at the table was awesome. He was so imposing. That would have been awesome enough for me as an experience, just to play him. I had a bit of luck go my way, as he bottled some tough shots, and I came out of it winning 5-3! (I actually think he was a little sick as he had an awful cough)

Then, in the single elimination round, I played another great player (Shen Dong Hua think his FR is above 700 still - a lot of Chinese don’t keep up with this since Covid restrictions) he had won a few games in the recent China open, and owns his own pool hall here. He beat me 8-2 and played a phenomenal game that was way above my speed. He was super friendly and we chatted for a while after.

Knocked out, but feeling pretty happy with myself, I was content to be done with the tournament. But then I ended up getting a text later on in the evening saying that I’d been ‘wildcarded’ to finals day! It started at 11am... but I’d dropped my cue off at the store I play at on my way to the bar… so after a few texts, the store owner dropped my cue to my half-cut ass at 1am! Felt pretty lucky it all worked out :ROFLMAO:

I woke up hungover, and went to the finals day, and had a good start winning my first game against a strong amateur player. Not really feeling in gear though. My next game was against Shen Dong Hua again… the guy who beat me in the single elimination round on the Saturday… he made pretty short work of me, and I only managed one rack from him in this game. I missed an opportunity to go 1-1 on a hard cut into the middle, and he dominated from that point.

My final match, I felt really in gear right from the start. I was going rack for rack until 3-3. Had a nice break and run and we both played some tight safety. But after that point, I had a total brain fade... He played a push out after his break, but I had been organizing some things in my bag around my chair. I didn’t notice he’d tied the 1 ball up at the top of the table. So… I played what I thought was an absolutely fire 2-9 bank combo. Thought I won the rack… then he pointed at the 1 ball... We shared a laugh about how he just watched me line it up and fire away, and how it was a great shot, and then he cleaned the table… he broke and ran the next frame. Shook his hand trying to smile away that I was feeling like an utter idiot inside. Then stayed and watched some far better players than me battle it out. Learned a lot watching.

So yeah, an absolute rollercoaster of a weekend. Luck went my way on the table, and off of it. Luck also didn’t go my way, drawing a guy who already had my number in the finals, and being naive about the level of attention I need to pay in competition. I won’t blame adhd either, as I was organizing some things that I should have organized before the match even began. I definitely felt that my temperament is getting better, with all the time I spent In the chair playing Shen Dong Hua. Just enjoyed watching him put on a show.

It was also a nice first run out for the Larry Vigas cue I picked up from a forum member in Taiwan (Thanks @DeanHan ). I stuck a medium Longoni Fuji tip on it, and it played really nicely. It’s truly beautiful! Probably well above my speed :ROFLMAO: great work @63Kcode - phenomenal stick!

So "the finals day" was double elimination?

I played what I thought was an absolutely fire 2-9 bank combo.

Tough way to lose.:(

I enjoyed reading your tournament report. Thanks. So many words, though. How do you know all those words? Do you read books, too? I don't know how anyone could know all the words in a book. After 50 words, I get distracted, and I begin hearing Brittany Spears lyrics in my head, so I usually just read Twitter. Maybe someday I'll read a book, but for now....Hit me, baby, one more time!

Yes, the finals day runs the same format as the qualifiers. There's a lot of entrants. Starts double elimination, moves to single elimination. They run Thursday evening, Friday evening, Saturday morning and afternoon for qualifying. One entry permitted. I attended the Saturday afternoon session. Each qualifying round is capped at 40 players. 7 from each qualifying session progress (top 6 and one wildcard - which I believe is based on overall racks won). The format for this particular tournament has changed twice since I have been entering it, and runs monthly. I often rely on my friend to tell me what has changed, as all information is delivered in Chinese (sorry if the picture uploaded is enormous :ROFLMAO:).

Very well organised event imo. Very friendly and welcoming too!

I get bored at work, and don't have many English speaking friends to talk with about Pool. That along with ADHD provide the word count haha - Yes, I also love reading (whilst listening to Britney haha)

Here it is! Cannot capture the stunning beauty of the wood. In person, the way the light hits the purple and the curly maple is so nice!
I'm using the 12.8 shaft, and popped a medium Longoni Fuji on top. It played itself in very nicely :) the table in picture is when I was in Taiwan, not the tournament.
The tables for the tournament are 4 1/8 cornered Aileex tables, and 4 1/8 cornered Diamond live streamed tables (I thought they were 4 1/4 before but they are smaller).

It was a great experience for me and I thoroughly enjoyed myself (even getting my ass kicked :ROFLMAO: I learned a lot)

It's looks beautiful in the pictures! Nice cue.
I'm honestly super happy with how it looks! I met up just to have a speculative look at it, but I knew when I saw it in person that I was going to have it. I have finally stopped taking it out of the bag at random times during the day and staring at it :ROFLMAO:

The 'hit' is really solid too, feels incredibly well-constructed. I might consider a slightly harder tip in future, but I haven't really fully played in this Longoni tip. Looking forward to breaking it in a little more.

Larry is a top notch Cue-Maker. Congrats on the cue...She's a beauty. From the vibe I get from your writings/demeanor, It seems the cue is the hands of a fine steward.
😎

If you haven't tried a Thoroughbred tip, and you are considering a tip change, it might be something to consider. They play very nice IMO. I believe that they are the tip of choice for Bluegrass Cues.
Best regards

She's going to be loved! My intention was to find a 'forever' cue, and I am feeling pretty over the moon with it. Thanks for your kind words :)

Thoroughbred tips? It's an American company? I will have a look and see what I can find over here. I played with really hard tips on my snooker cue, but I am still figuring out what I like in pool.

Wooldridge supertips have served me well in a MH capacity. I am trying out these longoni's that a friend gave me a while ago.

Quite fond of the red colour, and I am hoping as they play in a little they harden up a touch.

Yes. Here is their link. My apologies. They are actually Blue Grass cues. I forgot that their cue company name was two words, not one. A little nit-picky on my end. Probably my occasional OCD.

I noticed I might be able to get them here in Asia! Added a WeChat contact from the seller's page :) Thanks for the link. Will give them a try.

And don't worry about the OCD, we're all weirdos. The world is better that way :)

You are most welcome, and I agree. 😎

Little extra info:
A friend sent me these this morning :) - Zhu Xi He is 81 on the Asia list (was previously world number 43 according to the friend who sent me this info), and Shen Donghua is 716 (wasn't too far off with my guess)

Interestingly, this week I have had a lot of friends discussing and talking about Fargo here... Where as they weren't before... I think that perhaps there will be renewed interest here regarding Fargo now that restrictions on travel are no longer in play.

Nice Axe!!👍🏼

It's an absolute weapon. I'm in love with it. Sourced a couple of spare shafts. finally managed to get a butt cap that fits the thread and converts to a Mezz M6 extension. She's my forever cue!
Any response from the Thoroughbred tip folks?

Lucky devil. I hate you. Lol😂
I got super lucky and picked up a 60" Terbrock w 14mm shafts. My hands are huge and those 14s lay in there just right. I wanted a mezz, but couldn't locate what I wanted and this popped up out of the blue. Snatched it B4 the ink dried. Lol.
