I have never played one pocket. What would be the best way to learn the game and play? Thanks

1.Go to poolhall 2.Ask if someone plays 1p. 3. Start playing Seriously that's about it. There are books and videos if you want to go that route. Watch it on YT, lots of good matches to learn from. Join OnePocket.org, good site with a lot of info.

Get started. Play, watch, read. As you begin to understand the offense/defense, the game, you’ll love it more and more. You will learn each time you play. Can I suggest virtual or live lessons with Tom Wirth… nobody instructs better. Nobody.

The latest book on 1-pocket is:

Spend some time practicing 1-pocket strategy by yourself, e.g. the break. After that, you will at least have a general idea of what is going on during a game, as well as which shots you are capable of executing.

Or...walk into a pool hall, announce you've never played 1-pocket, and ask if anyone is willing to play $100 per game. race to 7, when you only have $20 in your pocket.

Two things needed for my approach: an opponent who consents to coaching and a willing and knowledgeable coach. If you can find two such folks who have enough interest in seeing you progress, it is an unbeatable process. One Pocket is about analysis. Having a coach in your ear telling you not only what shot to take but also why to take it, and vice versa, has no equal.

you can learn a lot by watching matches, and there are many matches to watch, for free. i watched a lot of efren, joyner, daulton when i started playing one pocket. also players such as ike runnels, who are not strong shooters or insanely aggressive, are good to watch. because they will get there with wise moves and tactics, which are invaluable to learn and implement.

A lot of good suggestions here. What I found that helped me the most and quickly was to play partners One Pocket and your partner was allowed to coach. One drawback is that folks can take too much time talking and that takes the fun out of it.

a·nath·e·ma /əˈnaTHəmə/ noun: kicking in one pocket.

My questionable memory causes me to want to say that kicking in one pocket is addressed somewhere in AZB thusly: "never, unless you are mad at your backer". Who's the culprit?

How I was taught and what I have observed. It was one of the few absolutes I was taught. I think the issue is the possibility of selling out,
Getting behind his balls often requires a kick either directly or off a ball
the only kick that can be A Sellout
i can think of is when the object ball is more than a diamond from your pocket on/near the foot rail
and you try to kick it in

Now is a good time to take it up!! There are a LOT of big One Pocket tournaments this year -- more than ever -- and all of them streamed!

Lot's of younger players getting into it too, which is a good sign -- especially when they are among the best players in the world!!

When the cue ball is on your side of the stack and he has a ball near his pocket
Dont you have to kick at it?
comes up all the time

you’re not thinking of all the other times you need to kick, aside from kicking to pocket a ball.
