Pros and Cons Gambling

No, the difference is being one of the competitors. The possibility for shenanigans is the difference. If I am the quarterback in the Superbowl, do you want me betting that the other team will win?

One of those things, I don't want a player or team betting against themselves. However, it would suit me just fine if a member or team bet themselves to win. An old lady had a race horse that was a no hoper but she always put a bet down for her jockey at long odds. They rode their hearts out for the lady.

No, you can’t have it because it gives information. The old lady betting the long shot didn’t really do this. People bring up Pete Rose on this sometimes. …. How valuable is it to a bookie if a manager sometimes bets his team and sometimes doesn’t? Or bets more or less like a card counter. Too much inside info.

There is only one old lady and she is the Queen of Hearts. Always loved.

It doesn't give a ton of information because gamblers gamble when they get a chance. Since you mention Pete Rose, he placed a lot of losing bets. When I first got heavily involved in horses, owning a half-dozen or so, I noticed that some trainers and jockeys always plunged if they had the money to bet and overall were big time losers. Following their lead was foolish. All of their inside knowledge didn't mean squat.

One chuckle, an old trainer liked the way a shadow roll, that band of fluffy stuff across the nose of the horse, looked in photo's. While a horse might or might not need a shadow roll so one wasn't a guaranteed tell, not having one on was a dead giveaway that the trainer didn't expect any winner's circle pictures of the horse that day!(grin)

What was it that Newman said in the Color of Money, "money won is twice as good as money earned" or something to that effect

If that applies to international law and international cooperation then ...

Stagnant money is wasted money. Its better to have money always working and in a state of flux. Keep it too long in one place and it devalues.

Compare NYC old infrastructure to old Russian infrastructure. Maintenance matters.

Look at my skin

Look at my skin shine, look at my skin glow

Look at my skin laugh, look at my skin cry

When you can’t even sense if they got any insides

These people all pretty in their ribbons and bows

nothing wrong with gambling or not gambling. although as ive said we all gamble for decent money on things.

but betting on yourself is different it can be thrilling for some and pressure for others.
it is really a way to keep score on how you do at your sport you bet.
many people can make good money betting, and why not. just dont make bad bets.

A good bet for one must be bad for another. If many people are winning good money, then . . . It is gambling, not winning, I have lived in and around gambling all of my life and have seen all of the good and bad aspects. The secret to successful gambling is discipline. Successful gamblers learn very early: "Pigs get fat, and hogs get slaughtered".

Gambling is and always will be a part of pool, in part that's what makes pool more interesting to the average person. One only has to look at the success of the movie The Hustler to illustrate that. So many of the great stories and folklore relating to pool has to do with gambling in some way or another. As mentioned in some of the above posts gambling in other major sports is also pervasive but nobody seems to criticize that too much. Add to all this is that pool is tailor made for betting and matching up with all the different ways to make spots on games.

Degenerate gamblers. Cons. Lose your job. Lose your business, your friends. Do something illegal to recover money needed for bills. Lose respect. Give back whatever got won.

Why I will gamble:
To show up in a room where they don't know me....trying to read how good people play and if I can beat them. Knowing if I do they will put up someone better to play.

To drop out of a tournament so I don't have to quit a guy who's stuck because I need to give him a shot at his money

To beat a guy out of his money, his buddy too and his girl...then give them gas money to get home.

To drive 10 hours to Derby City and stay up 5 days playing people I probably shouldn't and breaking even.

To play my best customer at Super Billiards Expo and play 10 hours a day with multiple pros watching us.

There's just so many more reasons I choose to get in action.

Gambling on pool takes 3 things and to do well you need them all
Heart- can't be taught

Bankroll- best if you back yourself...intimidating to opponents playing for groceries

Game- working on your play so you know you can perform in any situation. Game can be a guy who knows his limits and knows how to get the game he needs to have a chance to win.

Brutal truth, I have never seen anyone in it for the gamble rather than for the game emerge winner long term. If they are a winner at pool they throw the money away somewhere else. Fats made a bunch playing pool but rumor has it he lost most of it at cards or other gambling.

Titanic Thompson was millions ahead between gambling at good odds and just plain cons. He died broke having given most of it to the ponies.

Having pool tournaments in casinos means most winners never leave town with their winnings. The craps table seems to be a particular weakness of pool players.

Action junkies are in it for the action. They would rather be in bad action than no action. The local guys bet with me on the tacit understanding that I would at least give them a chance at the money although most of them knew I had a "road player" game that was several notches higher.

One of the funnier things was when I played a tough road player and had to pull out all the stops to win. Afterwards the blood was still pumping when a local gambler put his money up. Still in full race mode I slashed through the first few games. He said "Hey, this is me you are playing now!"
