Installing quick release pin with alignment barrel

I need to install a quick release pin for an extension.
My experience as a hobbiest is installing standard full thread 3/8 10 which I've done quite a few times.

The qr pin has an alignment barrel. With a full threaded 3/8 10 I test fit with a doner pin I have. If it gets stuck in there I can grab it with plyers to turn it back out. I pretty much wrecked one of the qa pins getting it out, gouged the end of the align pin which has a pretty tight tolerance for the hole it goes into.

So do you leave enough room around the barrel so you can test fit it and turn it back out by hand without a problem or is that too much room? As you can see from the pic there isn't a lot to grab to turn it back out.

Thanks for any info.

Generally you want things as tight as possible. This isn't a super critical pin installation though, so measure the barrel with a micrometer, bore the hole to size and do a test fit (carefully this time!) and if it's still super tight bore out half a thou and try again. Are you sure that QR pin is 3/8-10?`
the ones I use look very similar, but have a 5/16-14 thread and the barrel is .312.5"
Maybe you are boring the hole for the threads very snug?

No it's 5/16 14, the 3/8 10 is the reference to what I've done. I don't really do a lot, just the pins on my own cues so 3/8 10 is my experience.

I'm not sure how to test fit carefully, just get it big enough so I can get the pin in with my fingers? I guess that way I should be able to get it out.

If you feel it's tightening up to a point you are unsure you'll get the screw out again, it's too tight.
Letter F drill bit for the 5/16-14 threads and bore the barrel to size, micrometer and gauge pins is great for getting a snug fit. Remember that when you add the epoxy, that almost acts as lubrication  especially if you use a thin epoxy like West

Make some plexiglass pliers. I use them for installing joint screws.
Home depot sells 1/4" plexiglass.
Or
Make a split bushing to go over the smooth barrel and put it in a drill chuck in your tailstock.

I have some delrin I could do that with, thanks.

First time around I tried it with rubber as a cushion, didn't cut it.

You should market those plyers, that's an excellent idea.
Thanks

Thanks but they were not my idea.
Mr. D'Angelo of the D'Angelo leather fixtures.

I've tried a few different items and settled on a pair of adjustable channel locks.
Glued some thick pcs of leather on to the jaws.
I can get good pressure and seems to grip better than anything else I've tried and doesn't chink up the pin threads.
Use on my threaded ferrules and threaded collars also.

What size pin and thread count does a standard Uniloc pin have?
