Facings question....

Hello, If I close the corner pockets with 3/8 facings and then cut them at a bevel, 1/4 thick at the mouth and 1/8 thick at the throat, am I better off taking 50 or 60 in hardness? Thanks!

I change my question, with a corner pocket at 139 degrees and 15 degrees down and 4 13/16'' at the mouth, does a 5/16'' 50A Duro will react good or it is too soft, Thank You!

I have the 3/8 facings from Classic BIlliards, they are 50A and I don't think they are soft enough. Pocket's accept balls they shouldn't. Guess nothing replaces really extending the rails.

Glad to ear that, the owner of the room here don't want to change the cushion for the moment and some table are higher than 146 degrees and play like garbage, I will receive 3/8 and 1/2 neoprene 50A this week end and make the job on one table first, my opinion was that with 139 degrees it would give an extra chance and that 50A would be correct, but not being 100% certain I would prefer to ask for opinions here. If, as you say, the balls will be well accepted, it will be perfect and everyone will be happy here. Thank you very much for your help, it is much appreciated.

Wow at 146deg. I would imagine they play like garbage. 141-143 deg. is within WPA specs if I'm correct. Especially if you're keeping the pocket size at 4-13/16". I wouldn't go to 139 deg. unless you were closing the pockets down to more like 4-1/4"
Just my opinion from what I've learned. Curious what some of the more experienced mechanics think.

These table are in a pool room for everyone and they came brand new at 5 inch and 142 degree, these are Black Crown 1, on old cloth 142 is a bit too much I think, may be at 140 but not more.

Here's something to check out from the green book. You can decide what to do.

Made some test for the fun, glueing rubber on rubber and rubber on wood and believe me that this gel glue from Gorilla is simply incredible, sometimes it's not my first choice, but for this use that's amazing, the gel is very thick, need to hard shake the bottle nozzle down.

Yess, I have something like that and I will go with 140 degrees at 4 15/16'' and 15 degrees down angle, Thanks to answer!View attachment 736535
I wouldn't go 140 degrees. That shallow of an angle is reserved for tight pockets so balls don't rattle out on shots down the rail with pace. With an almost 5" pocket, 142 degrees should be the recommended opening. Balls won't rattle out or get vacuumed up and the table will play as it should. With 140 degrees on a 5" pocket, you'll have a gaff table. This is 140 degrees on a 4 1/8" pocket.

Please, explain me at 5'' and 140 what will be the difference in balls reaction vs 5 and 142, you said that will do a gaff table, explain me a bit more?

If you widen the pocket angles too much, it will spit balls out. If you narrow the pocket too much, it will accept nearly everything. That's why some stock bar boxes have less than parallel pocket angles. A 140 degree pocket at 5" will be a VERY easy table that will accept any shot hit in the vicinity of the pocket. Shots that wouldn't fall on a table with 142 degree pockets will fall with 140 degrees. The pockets won't play properly so you'll have a gaff table.

Ok, that's what I thought, that it would be easier at 140, here in Quebec we have a pool room that kept 5'' and reduced its angles a little, it had 142 at the start, the tables are all new , and after reducing the angles everyone is happy with that, I don't know how many degrees they reduced them, but I'm going to go out and measure them, it should be around that at 140 degrees. Another factor too is that the cloths here are not changed often enough, a couple of degrees could give a chance, I'll go measure that and publish it, thank you for your attention!

It used to be practice to get better but I guess we are at a stage in society where we'd rather alter the equipment to make us feel like we are better. Whatever floats your boat, I guess. 142 degrees is perfect for a 5 pocket, IMO.

May be with new cloth....
