Archers Not So Comeback and Commentary

All things off the table aside -

I think Archer has lost his nerve, which can happen with age in all sports. I was watching the Turning Stone live stream and in his warmup he was quick, decisive and making everything he shot at. Once the match started he was back to being uncomfortable and slow, picking lint off the table repeatedly, missing shots and position that he has made millions of times, etc...
I happens to many as they get older
I remember Neptune Joe Frady (RIP) saying to me
I can't believe the shots, I never missed in my life, now make my nervous

The 55 year old JA I watched at Turning Stone did not resemble in any sense of the word of the 1995 'gunslinger' JA that I remember in those years. The old JA was a fast player, with a tremendous break. I know he's complaining of vision issues at his current age, and that' normal as we get older. If this is what's affecting his game now he needs to get fitted for some pool glasses or contacts which will help in this regard. I hope he defies the law of chronological gravity and makes some sort of a comeback although I wouldn't bet the mortgage on it. Good huck JA

He should get some prescription gold Aviators and swim laps every day

Wouldn't bet 25cents he makes a comeback. His ol runnin buddy Davenport played MusicCity and did ok. Unless someone re-starts the senior tour Archer has no chance of winning again.

God can we give archer a break. He’s a hall of famer. One of the greats and he’s going through a lot of shit. he’s financially on his ass. He’s recently divorced. He’s fighting for custody for his kids. Pool is all he knows and he’s trying to earn a living again and dig himself out of a hole. He’s human man who’s going through the struggles of life Just like we all do. His stress levels are probably off the charts now I feel for the guy and hope he can find a way out of it. D

I suspect that you are correct, that's why I said that I would bet the mortgage on it. I remember Kim playing in that Music City tournament and he did okay, but okay and winning tournaments at their ages is a huge step. Miz did that senior tournament thing back in the late 90's as I recall and it had a modicum of success but I'm not sure in this day and age how well something like that would do. Probably a one pocket tournament from time to time is about as much as can be expect from some of these older players now. Nick and Efren can still be competitive at that discipline.

After recent events, I’m not sure there are many pool rooms that would want him representing their room nor am I aware of his teaching skills.

I believe the podcast backfired on him. It exposed his dire financial issues and even worse, his lack of integrity. By storming off, he couldn’t even provide a chance of a plan for any closure to this situation.

Your right, he blew his chance to offer any kind of action plan with the intent of rehabbing his rep

I’m watching Kim play Hennessy right now at music city. Loser finishes 4th winner moves on. So there’s that

Can someone kindly link this train wreck? Thanks
Do yourself a favor & don't watch it.
A guy shoots an air barrel & loses.
said guy simply never pays his debt.
now this guy wants everyone to feel sorry for him because he broke the #1 rule in gambling
(DON'T SHOOT AIR BARRELS) It really sad to watch.
He used to play good pool so none of those rules apply to him.

I don't like highlighting a dumpster fire. But by popular request...

Thanks for the link of the Podcast but I did watch that. Sad. I was asking about the Upstate Al stream. I found it. Here it is. Johnny's match starts around 50 minutes in.

I'll take your word, Jay. I never knew this. Glad to learn that there's a precedent to inspire Johnny.
A little back story Stu. Caras did an exhibition
at the Campus Cue in Norman, OK in 1963. It was my first time seeing him in person, but I had seen his name all over the BCA record books and read about him elsewhere.

He ran over 100 balls with ease, made all his trick shots on the first try and was great with the crowd of college kids.

When given a chance to ask him questions I piped up and asked him why he never played in tournaments any more. He was a little displeased by my question and responded they weren’t that important to him any more. I realize now he was making a better living being on the Brunswick staff and doing exhibitions.

Lo and behold a few years later he comes out of retirement and wins the U.S. Open! Interviewed afterwards he said he just wanted to see if he could still compete with the best players. I guess he showed them. It was an elite field with Balsis, Lassiter, Moore, Murphy, Butera, Crane etc. Mosconi did not play. After his debacle in Burbank, CA he had quit for good.
