game or sport

I know this about billiards...

It starts as a game, becomes a sport,
then science, then art, meditation,
spiritual, and for some a religion.

I am just a pool player.

My first ten crushes ignored me at the pool hall. Best times of my life.

I think the WPA comes to pool saddled with too much IOC baggage. But one perk is that there is a recognized structure. Governments recognize the IOC. IOC recognizes all members of the General Assembly of International Sports Federations (GAISF) as federations representing bona fide “sports”. GAISF recognizes WCBS as the federation for all cue sports. WCBS recognizes WPA as the federation for pool. So in all proper and official transitive linkages, pool is recognized as a “sport” from the most official of bodies available. Good enough for me. Pool is a sport.

But I did love the poetic phrasing from the OP.

I was a decent street chess player……Stephen Hawking would‘ve killed me……
I would’ve killed him at 9-ball giving him the rainbow crush.

I never saw the pool analogy to chess. Pool is more guerilla than chess. In pool you make up any move you need when you need it. Even a completely functioning Hawking could only manage an even chance. He's need at least an SAT shootout.

If its a team sport what roles are there?

What does pro team management prioritize? Its not fun and its not learning.

How is that different than league team management at the club level?
