Has anyone run a weekly 8 on the break pot? We have a 10 team VNEA league and want to do a weekly 8 on break challenge where entry fee rolls over if it's not made. Thinking of drawing 2 names a night to try to make the 8. Who has run one or who has participated in one that they felt was better than the average. Please advise on the rules that were used. I was thinking the final night of league I would keep track of how many times each player bought in and let them shoot till someone makes it (but haven't seen that done before). Thanks in advance.
 
Breaking and running a rack of 8 ball isn't as hard as running a rack of nine ball. I don't think the pots are going to be that huge.

But as per the rules. I would say that if it's linked to a tournamanet you use those rules.

Around me in every tournament they draw once for the chance and whoever is drawn has the chance to break and run. I think it's about $25k. I think you might have to play in a tournament possibly a few times to be eligible to get in. I'm not sure if you can buy multiple tickets either, But i would think there should be a limit per tournament.

Following a couple of leagues for a couple of years::

8 on the snap occurs so infrequently it is associated more with "how the table feels" than "how the players feel":
With 10 teams and 5 tables:: You may get 1 per season, or 4 on a single night.
 
A couple other ideas other than an 8 ball on the break. I play two leagues, a 2 person with 16 teams and a 3 person with 16 teams. Our two person has a 50/50 drawing with no limit on tickets purchased at $2 ea. Typical payout in in the $90-$110 range per night with the other half going into the year end prize money.
The 3 person league sells tickets, for $5 I think, for a 9 ball rack where if you break and make a ball, you can keep playing till you miss with payouts of so much a ball or a bigger payout if you run the rack. The hitch is if you make a ball or more, on the break, it doesn't count till you make your 1st legal shot.
Also, you can quit at any time after making your 1st legal shot, but if you decide to keep shooting after making balls, you better be sure you can make that next shot as if you miss, you lose everything. Even with many, many 600+ fargo players on that league, the pot gets extremely large at times as you still need to make a ball on the break first, and usually only one winner gets a chance at shooting. Also, not everyone that gets their ticket is the greatest player, and most importantly, pool players being the gambler's that they are, get greedy and don't always quit while they are ahead.
Some have won up to about $2000 for playing a single game of 9 ball. If the pot starts getting too big, like 3k-4kish, and the winning ticket holder breaks dry or quits at a couple hundred bucks or so winnings, they will draw a second ticket to try and pay out more winnings.
 
We have a pot for “8 on the break” in our league and it’s open to anyone who pays the dollar to get in. It’s fun and can get big

My record is 5 times in one night, but then again I have went months and never made it. The table, balls and conditions are a big factor. It's a silly little bet, but have fun with it. If it is an in-house league, I would just let the match games count.
 
I won an 8 ball break pot once. It wasn't a lot of money but it was more than first place in the weekly tournament got. I came in second that night so did pretty well money wise. It was my first break shot with a newly purchased Rich Chudy cue.

A friend came back from the loser's bracket with two eight ball breaks in a row once to win the tournament. The eight ball break shot was his standard break shot.
 
We had a side event at one tournament where it was just break and make a ball. All racked their own, and as long as you made a ball on the break, you went to the next round, but break dry and you're out. Entry was either $3 or $5, so just about everyone went in. They had a list of everyone that entered, and when you had a couple minutes free, you went over and broke. It went a lot of rounds and it got down to me and one other guy that wanted to split, so we did, and we each got thirty-something bucks. I thought that was fun because everyone participated. For break and run pools, only one gets pulled to go for the BNR.

8 ball on the snap is best done just during the tournament. If you want to do a separate pot, do a break and run one.

Because it rarely happens, doesn't really require any skill, and is a single shot. I don't think I've ever seen a tournament do that in all my time playing. They either do a break and run pot outside of the tournament, or do an eight on the break bonus during the tournament. I may pay some extra amount to get a run at making a couple of balls while playing, but I'm not going to pay to hope to get lucky to make the eight on a single shot.

The problem / risk of these high $ break pots from an owner’s or manager’s viewpoint is having to keep a huge amount of cash on hand on that night, and everyone knowing it.

My local does it. Works very well , you buy 3 tickets for 10$ and 2 people are drawn Max pot is kept at 500$ so in theory he won’t have loads of cash around. Also means if the first person wins it then usually the second one has a decent amount, since there is more than 500$ accumulated.
