US Open 08/18-23

In Fedor's defense, in the breaks prior to Fedor's comment, for MB's 4 breaks:

1. Zero down, zero past the headstring (unlucky on the 5 perhaps)
2. One down, zero past the headstring
3. Two down, one past the headstring (just about a legal break with 3 point rule and only because the 3 just about dropped)
4. One down, zero past the headstring

When you are 'supposed' to be doing a forceful break, those definitely weren't.

On MB's 5th break he got a warning after one down and one past.
I should have been more clear. I think Fedor had every right to question Baoanon's break speed if he thinks its against the rules. But all concerns should be made directly to the ref. This is what Fedor did after the break of the first rack, and I think that's perfectly fine to do so.

What is NOT fine is what Fedor did in the clip I posted. He blatantly mocked his opponent by asking the crowd if he should soft break in such a condescending manner, and then mockingly impersonated Baoanon's break stroke. WTF?

Would he have done such display if he was playing Biado, Filler, or Shaw? Probably not. It seems to me he thinks he can get away with completely insulting his opponent if it's one of the lesser known Filipinos.

I still think Gorst is the best player in the world. But now I'll be rooting against him for the remainder of the tournament.

I don't disagree that there are ways and means to handle things and he didn't come out looking good in this exchange whatever the excuse.

I think there's some extra history between them from the first time they met in the tournament in the Winner's Qualification. Fedor gives a hint about it in his vlog here:

He mentions drama with rules and referees around 7:28 so...

None of that excuses his behaviour which was petty and starting to move towards verbally insulting / mocking which is the beginning of bullying. You are also probably right, there are likely people he wouldn't have done it against whether that was bigger names, people he interacts with more, or just physically bigger people!

i suspected that history, having seen baoanans road to the QF. the first breaks in the QF were borderline, but i think fedor's reaction was over the top. the ref is there for a reason.

anyway. baoanan made a great debut on the main stage. fedor made a great comeback and some incredible shots.

What a day. What a night. Nailbiters and blowouts by guys playing at unreal levels.

Filler is not the best player in the world right now. It’s probably Gorst, but Aloysius Yapp arguably has a better claim. Magnificent runout, the last game by Yapp. So many tough shots.

Filler needs to get back to full time on all the big Matchroom majors. He showed nerves vs Yapp and just made too many mistakes. Yapp was steadier - something I would not have said even a year ago. Battle tested.

Gorst, what can you say? Nerves of steel and some ludicrous shotmaking.

Ko Pin Yi manhandled Shaw and Grabe. Vintage Ko.

Chua has been up and down all week. Not today. Absolutely suffocated Niels. As dominating a performance as I have seen all tournament.

Niels made two big mistakes, down 4-2 and down 7-2, by going risky offensive instead of playing safe. I know he felt he had to. The pressure of falling behind and all. He felt he needed to throw Chua off his game. I thought it was a mistake. He gave back the initiative to Chua.

Niels was great. Chua just didn’t give him much of a chance,

Oh, and Baoanan? What grit. Gotta give him props.

Yapp, Chua, Gorst, Ko - what a final four. Four of the five best players in the world? Maybe.

I can’t pick. Chua isn’t intimidated by anyone and Gorst has been falling behind. He can’t do that again. These are my two favorite active players (Niels is my alltime fav). Should be a great match.

Ko and Yapp a toss up.

Best event of the year. Could end up being the best WNT major ever in the short life of this tour.

chua's match against niels was brilliant, likely the best played QF. i didn't watch ko's match in its entirety though. those two are probably favorites.

yapp v filler was a bit of a dud. yapp needs to hit another gear to win this. gorst too. impressive to win from behind but there was a reason he got behind in the first place.

Maybe. I heard several mentions of how exhausted some of the players were after playing the Florida Open, BotB, and then straight to the Open. Certainly looks like Sky was pretty exhausted during his first loss.
Truthfully, Sky hasn’t been the same player since he found a woman, became a father and got married. Peoples priorities change.

If part-time WNT tour member Niels Feijin can play like he does at age 48, with one eye, a wife, three daughters, and a new business, Sky can play a little better too. He does get money from sponsors, too, since he is a professional pool player.

Sky’s newly acquired business sells pool-related clothing. Surely that’s incentive to play better. At the very least, give it your all when you do play. Sky tried coasting at both the Florida and U.S. opens.

Got no issue with Fedor. He’s not perfect, so what? It’s not like he acts like that often. He doesn’t. He’s almost always respectful.

The sport could use a little more villainy other than Jayson Shaw.

In any case, I’ll always root for him. Too damn good, too damn relentless, becoming too much like a true American for me not to. Crowd was chanting USA after he won and Gorst showed his appreciation back. Love it.

Not rooting for or against him today, though. Chua is probably my favorite player over Gorst by a hair because of his attacking style. Just want to see a great match. My gut say Gorst avenges his loss to Chua at the Knight Shot Open.

We are definitely in for a treat today. These last 4 have been showing a lot of ability and heart! I can’t wait! I think Yapp has all the momentum, but it’s hard to bet against Chua, Ko, or Fedor. Man. I like Yapp if only to add him to the list of players with an undeniable year of success!

A little chink in the armor….get to be a winner and victimized at the same time?

I've never quite understood the bitching about soft breaks, but if they're such a problem why not just set a minimum cue ball speed and cut out all the subjectivity?

Personally I like seeing a variety of breaking speeds and techniques, from vintage Earl to vintage Corey Deuel. If it works, it works, and if it doesn't work, the player will adjust.

Matchroom has a specific 'forceful break rule' to stop pitty-patty CD style breaks. What constitutes a forceful break is at a ref's discretion. A radar-gun would be cool. Soft breaks suck. Other than Corey himself you might be the first person i've heard say they liked soft breaking. Its not how the game was meant to be played.
