What era of Schon plays best? (Cue Geek Talk)

In terms of collectibility, there are some legendary cues from the Runde and Clarke era.

In terms of playability there were some killers playing real good with clarke made Schons. Johnny Archer, Reed Pierce, Shannon Daulton, Jimmy Wetch…to name just a few. I can name more but hoping someone else might chime in.

I love Runde era Schons as well! Grady did play and make it to the finals with Nick in the 89 Brunswick open, using a Runde Made Schon. Can you think of any other great players who used a Runde Schon?

I purchased this STL 15 that Evan made with a unique orange veneer. It plays superb!

Thoughts?

Unfortunately, there's no way anyone can accurately answer this. All cues from every era are going to have variations in how they hit as, even if they're the same design with the same species of woods, no two shafts or butts are exactly the same. I will say, though, if you can find an older one that's straight and hits/plays the way you want, you can't really go wrong. If it hasn't warped by now it probably isn't going to as long as it's cared for properly.

Also, judging a cue's playability by who made the finals or won a tournament with that brand isn't really a good way to look at things. The guys you mentioned could have probably done the same with just about any cue out there. They're just that good and they were playing at the tops of their games at those times. The best player I've ever had the chance to watch in in his prime on a regular basis won the all-around title at The Derby with a cut down house cue paired with a Schon shaft. But, again, there's zero doubt in my mind he could have done that with any cue he was comfortable with. He was simply playing that good at that time.

My main player is a Schon SP-HULK (lime green wrapless) from 2017. It is the best playing Schon I have personally tried, and the best playing cue of the 60+ cues I have owned...It just happens to be a bonus that it is my favorite color. Many people have shot with it and agree that it just hits great. Nothing mind blowing, it just flat out works....Even guys who do not like the traditional Schon feel like it.

I recently sold two newer LTD Schons that played like crapola IMO. One of them came crooked right from Schon, the tip would actually leave the table. They did a refinish for free, but charged me $80 for shipping after their shit quality control. I owned a few Clarke era Schon LTDs and they felt good as well. The all ebony Clarke era Schon was a powerhouse, just too heavy for me to get used too.

I don’t disagree with you on any point. Just trying to stimulate some conversation. BTW, which player are you referring to? I know James Walden also preferred Schon based on his recent interview.

ironically, my friends would give their opponents a meucci, AKA boiled spaghetti noodle, to play with because they were so limp you had no idea where the CB was going.
 
I played with my R2 for decades, loved it. Nowadays it’s hard to say because the Schons or others I use now have Predator shafts
