Sneak-Peek, Half-CaF Shaft

As the title suggests, the shaft is CF for the first ~18", wood at the joint. In this case, I used bubinga to match the butt. My previous was maple at the joint end.

This started as an experiment due to a CF blank that was unusable. The results were pretty fantastic. Feels great, plays great, and a completely different look than any CF shaft I've seen (beauty being in the eye of the beholder and all that, but I think they are both great looking). I've played with the first shaft for a few months, including breaking with it, with no issues. Generally people love how it hits, with one of the better players I know comparing it favorably with his preferred CF shaft.

Early testing on the shaft above feels even better than the first. Both shafts feel better to me than any CF shaft I've used.

Interesting.

Very interesting. How is the weight distribution?

The bubinga shaft is long, 31.5". Weighs 4.3oz with a balance 12" from the joint. I messed up in my original post, the CF section is 20.5"

The first one I made with the maple is 30.5", 3.7oz, with a balance point 13" from the joint.

I posted on here about 3 yrs ago of a guy on the Schon forum that was doing this, and would try and match the wood portion to the butt.
I think it looks pretty neat, but back then all the naysayers somewhat ripped me for even suggesting such a thing.
Anyway, I like it if it works, hopefully you have more success as I haven’t seen anything else from that guy a few yrs ago.

I love seeing you guys innovate and try new things. I haven't played enough in past few years to give the carbon fiber trend a try, but I see no real downside to it. And this looks like it could blend the best of both worlds. If the answer to this question is proprietary or whatever I completely understand, but how far into the carbon fiber does the wood part of the shaft extend?

The tenon is 3.5" into the cf shaft, tapered and grooved.

A lot of cf shafts feel harsh and slightly unpleasant to me, these don't. Very solid, tho.

I want are of anime doing similar, thanks for the info. I haven't seen any real downsides yet.

Nice work, nice to see a different take on it. looks great. It reminds of the very old Brunswick cues, with the ebony spliced in the shaft.

Thanks, bud. It really opens a lot of possibilities for design. I have an order for a cue that will feature a really cool piece of curly maple. The customer likes the piece so well he wanted to feature more of it, so we will be using extra length in the shaft portion.

Feel free to look back through my past postings, I'm sure it was at least 3 or more years ago, and possibly over 5 yrs or more. I think I even posted a picture of it. I haven't seen anything mentioned in quite some time. I know I had a picture for awhile, but would have thrown it out unless it's on my backups somewhere. Good luck, I always thought it looked sharp.

I wouldn't want to sell something like that, a few nice captain hook style break are going to really test that connection.
