French Lick Resort

This area just isn't known for it's pool players so a league would be unlikely, especially in a Dave & Buster's type environment! French Lick hosted a pro tourney back in 99 iirc but other than that I've never heard of any players from that area or any surrounding counties.

That's very true. I don't recall over the last 27 years of hearing of too many players in this immediate area. I know of a few but that's about it. Of course Greg Sullivan and Diamond Billiards are only about an hour away. And as I've always said, with nobody in the area competition has always been my weak link. Never really had anybody to play.

And French Lick hosted that Mizerak Senior US Open because there was a Brunswick factory down there.

The only player in that vicinity of the state that I know of was Don Gladish from Winslow, outside of Evansville him and Larry Scott from Princeton would've been the 2 best players in SW Indiana 25 years ago. Don beat Chuck Raulston in the Arthritis tourney way back and Chuck snapped his cue in half because he thought he got lucky which is funny!! It's bizarre that there aren't any more known players from Dubois County or West of there across the state! Nick knows Don and Larry well they are all around the same age if they are still around!

Never heard of those guys.

There is a guy over in Orange County, just east of French Lick, that is a really good player. His name is Rich Minton. I believe he plays down in Louisville alot. Assume he is still going full speed ahead.

And I think there is a league down in Jasper (Dubois County). I went down there to watch several years ago, thought I might be able to get on a team. After watching one table for about 20 minutes I realized........well, what rhymes with Coke.......

According to their Facebook page the French Lick Billiard & Bowling Pavillion is now officially open. Rental by the hour.

It appears to only have two pool tables.

Here in about a month I will have that many myself.

one of the finest golf resorts in america. pete dye was from that area and designed the courses.

I thought it was a Donald Ross. At least the original. But I haven’t googled it before posting. Haven’t played many Ross courses though. I need to play more of them I think.

Both, Ross opened in the 20's sometime. Love to go there but its out of my price range.

Just looked at the website. I think I’d like the Ross course and the 9 holes they made from an old course. The new Dye course I’d play maybe feeling obligated to. It is probably good in its way but if I played 20 times at that resort with my choice of courses I could see winding up Ross-18, Dye-2. Maybe not. The only things that have kept me from playing a bunch of cool courses are time and money.😆. Although I am less interested in playing some places than I used to be.

You might want to reconsider playing the Pete Dye course unless you are a mountain goat. It is on the peak of a …. All right. Indiana doesn’t have any mountains. But southern Indiana has hills, and among those hills is this thing that sticks up in the air which even when you approach it from a couple of miles away you say to yourself, “What the devil is that.” And the Dye course is on its summit. I’ve walked the course twice for PGA seniors tournaments, one men’s and one women’s. There’s a par three on which if you miss too wide of the green your ball may eventually roll to the Ohio River. I’m old but in reasonable shape. I don’t believe I made it past the twelfth hole for either tournament. Of course the players walk a much, much more level path than the spectators do. You’re always in the middle of the fairway off the tee, right?

The person who said above that it’s not easy to get there is correct. If you want to relax, it’s the right place. There’s a casino. If you’re visiting, the German restaurant in Jasper is fun, as are the monastery and the convent in Saint Meinrad and Ferdinand. Well, maybe not fun but …you know what I mean. Also, the Orange County Museum in French Lick is charming. It’s tiny but high grade. It’s no more than a thousand square feet, but very informative. If you’re visiting and are with children, they would be delighted for that museum has a wonderful display of miniature circuses.

The two new pool tables are actually in the West Baden hotel, which is a long par five from the French Lick hotel. It is architecturally quite extraordinary.

The 1924 PGA Championship was played on the Donald Ross Course in French Lick. It's often referred to as the Hill Course. The greens are extremely hilly and undulating. Three putts are the norm.

Walter Hagen won that year.
