Indicator mounted to headstock

Not a bad idea if you like it. I had mine like that until recently. I put up with it being a bit in the way for the convenience of it. I needed it for checking something away from headstock recently and put it back on the base. Once it was off, I realized it is more versatile and less in the way. It still mounts on the headstock when I need it to.

I have a similar setup as in Chucks pictures. It does get in the way at times but can't imagine being without it. I am switching over to the longer arms and lever style indicator as in Divers post and will be installing a foot or two of metal strip to my table so that I can move it around and not be connected to the headstock.
I also have a pack of brass shim stock from .001 to about .15 and in .0005 variance in the thinner stuff. Works great to help true up stuff. I see diver is using that new attachment to help true up stuff. I'll wait to see how his works before I try one.
I'm really jealous of those of you with machinist lathes that can true out runout just by adjusting the chuck.

Do they make a 4 jaw independent chuck for a taig lathe?
I don’t believe they do. I have 2 that were custom made. With the amount of work it takes I’m guessing a $150 chuck would turn into $700-1000 chuck real quick unless you can do it yourself.

These are the ones made for me, they look pretty similar. You need a spacer behind the chuck so it doesn’t bind on the housing.

how'd you get a nut in the slot to mount the indicator arm?
Thats what I thought was cool about it.Just lucky I guess. Bought arm at amazon. Stem of arm is 10/32 or 5mm same as nuts in headstock. You are able to fold arm out of the way or fold it forward to measure your carriage travel. Most indicator bases were at least 1/4x20 or larger from what I remember

I was reading up on it . 5mm and 10/32 are not the same. But in my case it seems close enough to work

you're saying your headstock already came with a spare nut in the housing?

My Mid America came with them, you can always add your own though, or make a small plate with holes spaced for the nuts that are there and tapped for your post screw. Sometimes you just have to slightly modify things to get it the way you want.
