Big Ko on Waxed Balls

Pool balls that have been polished are not allowed in professional pool tournaments. The BCA rules strictly prohibit polishing pool balls in a tournament. I realize the presumption is aren’t brand new pool balls polished? I suppose that’s logical to presume but pool balls that have been cleaned and polished are verboten under the equipment specs. Dr. Dave produced a segment about polished pool balls and how cling is affected but local tournaments do as they please since the pool balls are used daily for commercial play. Some rooms don’t even clean their balls daily which is likely due to employee laziness.

it's different because first of all it's not so extreme as pure silicone, but more importantly all players will start the tournament getting to know how the balls and tables are. the use of wax/silicone as a cheat is to exploit the gap in knowledge between the waxer and his opponent.
 
No waxing of pool balls. Use alcohol to clean them period the end. The waxed on the balls balls will penetrate the cloth and those 14.1 players who need waxed balls for high runs—stop.

I would think the ball manufacturer’s recommended cleaner would be the best standard, if they didn’t peddle their own overpriced/branded proprietary products.
 
When you get a new cue ball, there is a coating and it is a little slick. Once you wear that off, the cue ball plays differently. As we all know. When I practice the vertical masse shots, you can imagine that ball gets dirty and it isn't as slick as a new cue ball. After I clean the cue balls, I do put a small amount of car wax on a micro fiber cloth and rub the cue balls. It makes the cue ball play like a new ball again. I have no problem with a pool room that wants to keep the balls playing like they are new. Usually for pro tournaments the balls are new anyways so that shouldn't be an issue.

I think there is some confusion between (a) clean and polish and (b) wax/silicone.

Attached is a picture of my Super Pros that are over 15 years old after I cleaned and polished them with Aramith Ball Cleaner. No wax. They looked like they were new out of the box after I polished them.

I am pretty sure that new out of the box Aramiths are just polished. In particular I don’t think the new CB would act like the CB in the Ko video.

They appear to have yellowed. Is that aging, photographic, Aramith cleaner? :ROFLMAO:

I’m pretty sure it’s just aging. Old phenolic balls yellow in my experience. I don’t think it’s the ball cleaner - I don’t clean them often so I’d be surprised if the cleaner did it.
 
Ok. All my cueballs from the 70's have yellowed but those have gone through many polishing cycles too. Liquid Glass and another boutique brand. I have several Aramith ferrous balls from the last 10 or more years that are scuffed but otherwise still white. Those were done with tap water only. Gotta wait 40 more years I guess.

If you mean the Aramiths for coin op tables with the ferrous materials throughout the other coating, I think whatever that material is is not normal phenolic and doesn’t turn yellow. I have some old balls like that and they are still white.
 
Watched an exhibition with Earl Strickland and Dennis Hatch, and they sprayed silicone all over the balls several times. Got it on the floor too, it was pretty slippery in a few spots. :LOL:

To me, the small amount of wax does the polishing. Silicone changes the cue ball.
