Per your advice Steve, I ran my boards through a planer to ensure that the slate would be as flat as possible on the frame. I ended up using Gorilla glue and clamped it very well. Thank you for your input Steve.
I am stapling the cloth. The wood backing is really full of staple holes from over the years and a couple of the boards popped loose. With little effort they all came off. I cut new boards using poplar. I'm assuming the manufacturer used some type of contact cement.
