Per your advice Steve, I ran my boards through a planer to ensure that the slate would be as flat as possible on the frame. I ended up using Gorilla glue and clamped it very well. Thank you for your input Steve.

I am stapling the cloth. The wood backing is really full of staple holes from over the years and a couple of the boards popped loose. With little effort they all came off. I cut new boards using poplar. I'm assuming the manufacturer used some type of contact cement.

Thanks for clarifying this. I guess I didn't know the correct term to use. I'm talking about what the shaft does. After contact the shaft vibrates quite a bit. The shaft is a 12.75mm. Thanks for all your help folks. I really appreciate the feedback.
