BCA or APA for League Play

I played APA for years. It was fun but the time commitment was too much and we always had SL problems getting ranked up. Watching 2 SL3 battle it out for 45 minutes in a race to 2 drives me crazy. Especially if they don't have an interest in learning. In BCA we can finish in an hour in a half...

Tight pockets are NOT good for the game!

jtompilot, that pretty much describes me. I play at home on my 5x10 snooker table with difficult pockets. It is not going to make me better for league, but at my age, over 60, past my peak, the game is all about my personal enjoyment. It is fun. I don't have the time, desire or stamina to...

    Schmelke information

I still have a Schmelke. It was my first serious cue I bought with my own money. I moved on from it after a year or two but I still own it and take it out once in a while. I even got a second shaft for it at some point. Paid $275 for it new which in the 90's was a lot of money for me. I can...

Are there any books about the "Life" in a pool room or about one of the great "Action" pool Rooms?

Cornbread Red's book had a lot of stories about the Detroit scene back in the day. Grady's book was also fun to read. I could take or leave Rags to Rifleman. The best books IMHO are those written by actual writers. Playing Off the Rail by McCumber and McGoorty by Robert Byrne. I also liked...

Finally found a copy of Rags to Rifleman

As do I. It is an ok book. Agree about the small type. It has been on my shelf for 20 years after buying a copy at Showcase. I think my favorite story books are Grady's book and Playing off the Rail.

    Lots of APA Drama Lately

I like playing against hot heads like this. And I would never consider engaging him, touching him or trying to get him to shake hands. Or talking to him unless necessary. At least the poster did not get hit by a pool cue a ball or worse. Safe him, slow play him, block his pockets up, make him...

    8 ball vs 9 ball

APA 9 ball is not 9 ball. It is a ball race in rotation format. That does not make it necessarily bad and it can be fun with the right opponent. What I don't like about it is there is a lot less tension around pocketing the nine ball. It is nice to sink it because it gets you the break and...

how are ya'll doing in league ?

We are middling this session. However it was funny that probably one of the best players in the BCA league score a 12 the other night against us. (2+3+7+0+0). Total fluke but really funny. He scored 50-75 for like 20 straight weeks. Even he was laughing. Sometime the rolls don't go your way.

Benefits of joining an APA league?

The APA is designed to spawn off new teams as players rank up. That is a feature and part of their business strategy. It is generally easier for a 2,3,4 to get on a team. It gets harder at SL5 and at 6/7 it gets hard. I was out of pool for about 12 years and ended my APA experience in 2005...

Benefits of joining an APA league?

My local bar has about 20 well maintained diamond tables. This place would not exist if there weren't APA leagues running 5 times a week. I enjoy it as well as the big table halls. Your point is well taken that it is not going to produce a lot of champions and maybe that ship has sailed...

Benefits of joining an APA league?

Exposing new players to the sport can only be a good thing. I constantly hear people lament how the sport is dying out. Well you can't have it both ways. What's the point of being elite if the player pool shrinks to nothing? New blood means more money to bars, manufacturers and the sport in...

    When age bites

I never was a top player like some of you. When I felt my age it is when I started back in APA after a long pool layoff. I had a hard time playing APA, sitting around 5 hours and getting home after midnight. Playing BCA with the other mostly old guys, we can generally get home in a couple of...

    Senior Center intruder (me)

I did not. Introvert... I talked to him and his buddy briefly today. They even set out the snooker balls before I got there. I brought a shaker bottle and played a little bottle pool. My snooker partner did not show. When I got home I saw she had texted me and was waiting for a text. We...

    Senior Center intruder (me)

It is probably this place. But there are two I have visited. The other one was hopping but further away. Every table full and 3 or 4 guys came up to meet me. Another nice thing about this place is it is literally 45 seconds from a major pool hall. I am not worried and I am not one to horn in...

    Senior Center intruder (me)

Last week I signed up for a membership at a senior center because I can. Three tables. Two 9 footers and one Ten foot snooker. All brunswicks. I am hoping to cultivate some big table games not called 8 ball or 9 ball.. Today I played snooker with a lady who practically ran up to me last...
