The closer the tip is to center, the less lateral pressure(interrupted cut is what I'm getting at..meaning the cutter is hitting the proud part of the tip like a hammer) is applied while trimming...which is a good thing. If someone's tip has fallen off I'd refer them to the person who installed...

Take a piece 3/4 inch delrin and drill a 5/16 hole. Bore an end in it that fits tip. Use 5/16 reamer in tailstock... put glue on tip and insert into delrin.. slide delrin with tip onto reamer and move tip onto ferrule. Tighten tailstock and crank a bit of pressure. Voila.
