    Old 8 ball rules

They are two different games. In 9-Ball the 9 is the "money ball" and can be pocketed legally at anytime as long as the lowest numbered ball is struck first. This can happen on any shot, including the break. In 8-Ball the object is to pocket the money ball after pocketing a set (either solids...

    You have a ~14x18 room: 7, 8, or 8+ table?

I bought a 7ft for a room that was 17x 12. It played fine but there were a small number of shots where I had to jack up or use a shorter cue to have a backswing. I've since moved to a house with about 22 ft on the long side and 18 on the short. I've thought about swapping my table for an 8 or...

    Matchroom Suggestion Thread

The Crucible has become the home of the snooker world championship but I'm not sure that that was the intention when the first.contract was signed in the late 1970s. Back then it was a game dominated by UK and Irish players with a sprinkling of players from Candada, Australia and elsewhere. I...

Yeh I agree. As I said, some compromise would be fine.

    Winner Breaks..

I disagree. Close, intense match ups in alternate break where both players are under pressure, are far more exciting in my opinion. Regarding "alternate break is for losers" - this does still come across as macho - if that's not the intention then I apologise. Sure, some players will whine that...

    Matchroom Suggestion Thread

Yes, there's never a problem for commentators with English pool - although I can understand entirely why those used to solids and stripes only might think so. Correct me if I'm wrong but the US 8 Ball Open (or 8 Ball Championship, or something?) was played way back at least once with "Casino...

    Winner Breaks..

Nonsense. You can say well done to the winner whatever the format. If it's winner breaks and my opponent runs out the set/match then I'm the first to say congratulations. Same with alternate break when I lose. When I win I don't say "you loser" to my opponent. Do you have an argument for winner...

    WORLD POOL CHAMPIONSHIP (6-10 June2021) Champion $50K

    Yes, it's great. It's a big start.

    Winner Breaks..

Yes got that. I really don't mind either format, although clearly I prefer alternate breaks. However, most of the arguments made in favor of winner breaks are clap trap.

    Winner Breaks..

I guess with arguments based on logic and an understanding of the game. There are valid arguments for winner breaks but "keep shooting" isn't one of them. I realise, and respect, that you prefer winner breaks. But please either say that you just prefer it or back it up with a justification.

    Winner Breaks..

But you can do this anyway even in an alternate break format. You just run out successive racks that you break, and if you opponent is weaker on the night you pick up some racks in between when you don't break. Arguably more difficult because you are never "in stroke" and therefore it's a better...

    WORLD POOL CHAMPIONSHIP (6-10 June2021) Champion $50K

I think DE is a good thing, and something that pool does well. It has its place. However, yes for televised pro tournaments there is no need for it as long as everyone gets paid (after all, it's a full on "professional" tournament) - and hopefully that's what Matchroom is heading towards. A...

SJM Sizes Up the World Pool Championship

I agree pretty much with everything here except the commentary. I thought that while the guest commemtators were inevitably biased occasionally, they were actually unbiased most of the time. Having competitors who were knocked out a day or hours ago turn up in the box to commentate on the game...

    Winner Breaks..

I like the idea of lagging again at hill-hill anyway (in the alternate break format) like in darts where they throw for nearest to the bull.

    WORLD POOL CHAMPIONSHIP (6-10 June2021) Champion $50K

I wouldn't. I'd shake their hand and say well done, well played, etc. And I'd have a beer with them afterwards. Whether or not they would do the same if the shoe were on the other foot would be their choice.
