Matchroom got into the darts world some years ago, and there was a split there too. I don't know how this all ends for pool, but it's worth looking at what happened to darts - I _think_ darts is doing OK now.

In 2021 they did in fact have a timekeeper/ref at every table, for the whole tournament. It must have cost a fair bit to get all those people in, so it's understandable that it changed. Sky Sports broadcast the whole six days in 2021 so maybe that covered the cost.

If they really must insist on the "exciting" shootout thing, then whatever.. do it. It just happens SO SO MANY TIMES though. Make it be a slightly unusual thing, and it becomes more interesting. You can also have several different shots - there was an 8 ball thing a while back that did this...
