I think you're right on this; it was an impulse buy (buy now on e-bay) after Matt beat me to the J-17 on ebay.
Lucky for my evil twin, I was able to talk Matt out of the J-17.

It is an1987 or 88 Joss 16, MSRP was under $400.... inlays were most likely done by Mike Sigel, when he worked at JOSS between tournaments.
