Pretty neat, I want one, you going to sell these? How the hell did you attach the spring to the ball?

As far as cheating, some women consider it cheating if you play with your balls when they're not around.

1/4-20 tapped hole in both the ball and steel v-block, two pan head screws, and wrapped in rubber sheet. A jury-rig of materials I already had. Not for sale but you can make your own.

The impulse duration of two colliding high density phenolic spheres is a fraction of a millisecond, and the ball travel distance during this time is one or two thousands of an inch. The spring deforms linearly due to Hooks Law, and the back-force generated during the collision distance is less than the friction of the cloth on the table… so negligible. I would have to worry more about matching the weight of the screw in the ball to 168g total rigid body mass. So in other words, there will be pretty much no difference.

Using a box to stop the ball isn’t as convenient because this will reset for me automatically.
