My Interview with Bill Curran Optical

yep if you cannot look up and down the table clearly you need new glasses of some kind.

any kind that will work. and your regular ones should work.

How low do you get your head when you shoot? Glasses are designed so the focus point is in the middle of the lens. With a more stand up posture that works, but if you have your head right over the cue you aren’t looking through the center of your lenses so you aren’t looking at the right part of the glasses.

if its in the middle of the lens then you have to turn your head all the time to keep things in focus.

but really getting down super low will end up ruining your back when you get older, as many older players have found out.

My pair from Curran did not work out. And was oversold. I went to my local guy and used the frames with a new everyday RX. Any local that will listen and work with you and stand behind the RX will suffice.

Recreational player here. No Fargo rating. No tournaments. Just a guy that loves the game and hopes to be better than last year.

I’m a big fan of my Curran billiards glasses.

Wearing glasses since 13, seeing the top of the frames was always a distraction on long shots.
That alone kept me on bar boxes for ages.

Curran’s specs allow me to keep my head at a comfortable angle while allowing me to look “up” without lifting my head or wrinkling my nose to lift the frames that extra bit.

They work for me.

These work great and are only $22.00 on Amazon and they come in a number of strengths.

No frames to get in the way and large enough to see thru without twisting or turning your head.

I have been wearing glasses for 35 years. The idea you can get something better online compared to a trained optometrist in real life is ridiculous - been there, done that. Cheaper perhaps.

Fortunately my eyes actually got better with age and I do not wear glasses at age 72.
Years ago I tried Curran billiard glasses - they were Ok but he used drill through lenses and if your prescription changes - as often occurs, no other optical place will replace drill through lenses. So you had to go back to Curran at very inflated prices for new lenses and he did not accept insurance.
This was 15 years ago - things may have changed with him .

Has anyone tried those small padded plastic appliances that supposedly eliminates the need for specialized glasses?? They sit on the bridge of your nose and connect to the glasses frame, elevating your regular glasses to shooting height??
I'm curious if those work.

I've been wearing glasses consistently for 20 years but the frames were not conducive to pool, so I got a pair of these from Curran 5 years ago.

Interestingly I don't wear them or any glasses/contacts while playing anymore. While a prescription definitely sharpened my vision, improving my mechanics made the biggest improvement in my game. It's more about feel and consistency. I can see and aim just fine without them.

Upgrading my table lighting helped my vision tremendously however. No more dark corner pockets.

wtf?? you're clueless here. regular specs SUCK for billiard sports. there's a reason the make these specialized glasses.

ive been clueless before. following your lead. :)

i go by the multitude of players with glasses just using regular ones they wear all the time.

i do suppose special glasses help some. but certainly not a requirement.

Absolutely..I told the doc what I need.... clear vision from 4-8 feet. It worked...the rest of the room was blurry but the pool table surface worked out. I used a RayBan shooters/pilots frame with an Rx. Eventually I went to progressive lens that were set in a large frame and adjusted accordingly. There is no substitute for custom billiard eyewear.

The other problem with Curran was the upside down bit. The bridge piece that connects the lens was in the line of site and quite annoying. Not recommending his work although it works for some. Also the lack of professionalism... Extras.. do you want the ultra light lens, scratch resistant, etc.? For what they cost all options should be included.

I used my HSA, bought some of these, tried several types of "Frameless" style prior. These DO work GREAT! Highly Recommend them! Thanks Mr. Curran! Happy Customer!

My first pool glasses were a pair of reading glasses turned upside down to give me a higher field of vision when down low on the stick. With the “earpieces” reconnected right side up, it worked OK as a stopgap (until I gave in and got contacts for pool).

i get my glasses from the link below
excellent quality and hundreds of dollars less than curran
customer service from gordon the owner has been superb
also the lens can be replaced when your prescription changes (i have done this many times) becaus the lens is not attached via a drill thru
i have never had an issue with a local eyeglass store not wanting to make for me or change the lenses
