Video Shows Efren's Cue is NOT Straight

I actually think cue straightness is highly overrated as far as being a necessary trait in a well playing cue.

I mean obviously it should be close to straight, if you can look at it and quickly see that it has a bend then you probably don't want to play with that. But the lengths we go to, looking at the gap of light under a shaft taper for example, to make sure a cue is perfectly dead straight is just unnecessary. A little deviation form the center line is a non-issue as far as play and performance goes. And this helps highlight that....I have a feeling if you took a lot of pros cues, especially in that era, you would find many that were not exactly straight by many players current standards.

I had a South West Satin that came with the typical "South West roll"....the shaft was straight but the butt definitely had a little roll to it. Never once noticed it in use and it really didn't matter when playing. Now, it does effect resale and I was sure to mention that when selling it and I definitely think it impacted my selling price....but performance wise, that cue played fantastic.

All that being said...I still like my cues to be dead straight for whatever reason, but I no longer think it's critical from a performance perspective.
 
I remember during an ESPN match with commentators Steve Mizerak and Barry Tompkins, Mizerak said that Efren was playing with a $15 cue. In fact, he repeated it for emphasis, like, "can you believe that... a $15 cue."

I could probably find the video.

But whenever I saw Efren playing with some cue that looked like a broomstick, I wondered if that could have been true or if it was Miz exaggerating.

In an interview with Efren, Efren stated He did come to USA with inexpensive $10.00 cue.
In 3rd world where He came from at the time ,was all that was available I suppose
 
Like member slide13 has already said. Cue straightness does not mean much. All that matters is potting the ball. Played for years with house cues and had lots of fun beating guys with custom cues.

I never roll a cue either cause I do not want to know if it rolls nice or not. Makes no difference to me.

Once you get all those thoughts in your head it just distracts your mind and that will affect your game much more than a butt or shaft that ain’t perfect.

alex tried efren's cue a little in one tournament and then reviewed it in the commentary booth. it did not get high praise from alex 🤣 i believe he said worse than a bamboo stick

just think how good efren could have been with a straight and good cue !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😂 😂

Steven Hendry -Snooker's 7 time world champion...stated,
His cue came from a "rubbish pile" was warped and discarded,
But He liked the cue and beat everyone,
He had to get another cue when his 1st cue was damaged beyond repair at the airport
