Cues for Sale... Without Extensions

I was showing one of those I had to my brother in law years ago. When I pulled it off the entire butt cap/sleeve and rear rings came with it. He was not impressed. This was before I ever built a cue but I did take note. Everything I do is threaded.

If matching, an extension would be lovely. Hell, matching JPs while we're at it. :P

But I'm not going to tell someone to get the f out of my face if they try to sell me a non-stolen SW/Tasc/Tad/Tonkin/Gina/Gilbert/Cog/Carmeli/Szamboti/Josey/Joss/Josswest/McWhorter/Diveney/insertwishlisthere for under market value because I can't fit an extension on it that very millisecond. "You only want $777? Each? Oh no, my wallet slipped open!!"

Aftermarket for the win. I can always grab a bridge if there is one (my next purchase of stuff to throw into the bag, along with a shorter extension) or show off my table gymnastics (I'm getting better at my dismount, though I'm sure the Russian judge would still score me lower.)

One of the WPA equipment specs is that a cue can weigh no more than 25 ounces. I don't know why they have a maximum cue weight in the rules. How would a real heavy cue help (unless you are Paul Bunyan)? I think I'd be fine with my opponent trying to play with a 3 pound cue.

Since the cue being used to hit the cue ball is the sum of all its pieces, my view is that extensions (whether built-in or add-on) should be counted in determining whether a cue meets the 25 oz. limit. [This is not explicitly mentioned in WPA rules.] I'd guess that a Tony Ryan extension weighing 9.57 ounces would put the vast majority of cues over the maximum weight limit.

The WPA rule matters, of course, only in events that are following those rules. The CSI rules, used by the BCAPL and the USAPL, also have this 25 oz. weight limit for cues. I've never seen anyone called for using a cue over the weight limit.

However, Bavafongoul, the next time you are in the finals of a WPA world championship you might get called on that. So maybe you need to add a 15 oz. cue to your arsenal for such an occasion.;)
You are right but that means any slip on extension, like the Tony Ryan, would likely have to be 4 ozs. or lighter in
order to work with cues 21 ozs. and lighter. Oh well, I don’t have any 15 oz. cues so I guess I’m like the golfer that
plays a round carrying 15 clubs, i.e., 2 drivers. I can’t post my score for a handicap but I still had fun playing golf.

Even extensions are art. 🤌

I don't think that this discussion refers to high end collectible cues that usually don't see any table time...
I have a few nice cues (I play with them all), I wouldn't buy them again now that I have them for about 20 years... they are just not worth the investment in my opinion, and trust me, it's hard to see a nice cue for sale and skipping it...
That's fair. Priciest cues I have are maybe around $2k on the secondary market. If I owned monster cues ($5k+), they'd never leave home.

Those are what I'm about to try for my Predator and Pechauer. I have an 8" from Pechauer (~3.8oz) and a 8" HOW (~4.4oz) for my Predator. The HOW wasn't too pricey, but as much as I like Pechauer I'm not spending another $200 for a shorter extension and ~$100 from Predator.

I would agree with Lou here, having first used a cue with a rear extension in a tough spot - I desired that option on any cue that I owned.

I have fitted some less expensive cues for extensions myself using epoxy for the rear extension bumper. I have bought a few of my cues that had already been fitted for an extension. I sent one higher end cue to Bob Dzuricky(his cue) and he fitted the cue for me at a reasonable fee.

I highly recommend full CF material for an extension as it is so light on the cue that cue balance is unaffected.

I won’t touch my high end RB cue for an extension- want to keep it more original. So, since I use only hard leather tips on my break cue - I fitted that break cue butt for an extension to use it when my playing cue of choice does not have an extension.

I have found that the rear extension should be 10 to 14 inches in order to reach most shots on a 58 inch cue. The 8 inch extensions have more limited value IMO.

Lately I've been seeing a few very lovely cues for sale I'd have bid on in the past -- real knock outs.

But nowadays I want any cue I buy to be fitted for an extension -- IMO it's almost impossible to play without one. In the old days I would have never thought about it. But now, after playing with two cues fitted for an extension, I just can't bring myself to buy a cue without.

What say you?

I don’t know how I survived without an extension. Plus getting older, I find I need it more.

Today, any cue I’m going to seriously play with needs the extension. I had the TNS Tom Migliore system put on my Andy Gilbert a while ago and loved it, so I figured out a way to put the TNS adapter on my Schuler, which has the unique floating bumper/weight system. Jacoby uses the same extension system for their QR Extension, so when I had my Butterfly Effect Ukraine blank converted by Jacoby, I had Brandon put that QR Extension bumper on.

The TNS system doesn’t fit on my Tascarella, so I stayed with Blokid custom extensions for it. I had one made by BloKid when I first got my Tasc, but then I went crazy and had him make me a binary stack: 2”, 4”, and 8” that I can mix and match for different sizes. It was a silly idea.

I tried to put a Migliore extension bumper on my 2003 Adam Balabushka, and even though it fit, it made a pinging noise. Not sure why, so I abandoned it.

Today, I play awfully well (relatively speaking) with my new-to-me 80’s Meucci JR3. I am considering putting an extension on it, but it’s a different thread. I need to ask Migliore if he’s got one that works for an older Meucci.

That’s a long answer to… me too! I have a several screw-in mini butts… Cuetec, Lambros, Tiger (which is awesome) and my @Sheldon Lebow, which I had Sheldon make for me a long time ago, before these modern mini butt screw-in extensions really became popular. Other styles existed back then like the built-in telescopic ones.

I copied Karen Corr when she first came to the States to play 9-ball (early 2000’s). She had a cue built with the mini butt (as it’s called in snooker) because they have that in snooker. But she didn’t have a bumper. So neither did my copy, because the idea of having to make a custom rubber bumper was too much to think about for a one-off idea between me and Sheldon. I never felt comfortable playing with that cue without a bumper, so I had Sheldon replace the screw-in section with a regular bumper. I since have sold that cool cue, but I still have the screw-in extension.

I think my extension collection points to a bit of insanity.

I just recently inquired about this, It's a universal cue extension. So far the only reason i have not pulled the trigger is that adding the adapter would change the balance point for me slightly

I have an original 8” Predator extension that I got a decade ago. It’s wood and a bit heavy.

I later picked up a cheap stackable 8” CF and aluminum 8” extension that is light as a feather. I use that one as my primary extension and probably 19 times out of 20 it’s long enough. That 1 in 20 I need even more length I screw in the 8” Predator - giving me a crazy 16” long extension.

I wanted a matching Predator extension for my Roadline, but the price tag is just jaw-dropping. Been using this one for a year or so now, and have been pleased with it. 33 bucks on Amazon.

It looks very similar to the one I got. Not only is it cheaper than the Predator, it’s better. Lighter and more durable material. And stackable. I have no idea why Predator doesn’t update their product.

I have zero interest in buying a $3k cue only to have to send it off for an extension, wrap, refinish, whatever.

If I were to have another cue built I would insist it be fitted for an extension.

Possibly no need to send it off if the existing bumper is threaded or there is a weight bolt hole. The extension bumpers are available in different threads so you may be able to switch it out yourself and then just order the extension or have one custom made to match or at least look good.

It’s a great option, I gave one of those as well, the 8 and the 3 and they are stackable

I wouldn’t avoid a nice cue solely based on the lack of ann extension. You can pretty much convert any cue to take an extension these days.

I’ve done AE, Viking, Richard black, Frey, Mali, McDermott and a few others. I like the predator bullet pin extensions so I do that mostly. I also 3d print extensions that are lighter than the CF ones by a hair.

I don't disagree with the preference to buy a cue with a fitted extension, but I wouldn't rule one out just because it doesn't have one. My Tony Sauer sneaky is loaded with
🐘
but doesn't have a fitted extension, and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. I make do with a Qxtender made out of an old house cue. Maybe one day I'll find someone to do a retrofit.
